87 rt4wd engine swap

I've read many forums and blogs about which engines fit. The most I've gotten out of any of the posts is that there are two engines that will fit the rt4wd tranny. The D16A1, and the D16ZC1. The A1 seems possible, but the ZC1 is controversial between some people. If someone could tell me which engines actually fit the stock transmission, that would be great. Remember, it's a 1987 rt4wd wagon.

The D16a1 and the 1st gen DOHC Zc (the one with the engine mount on the front of the car) will fit the 87 RT4WD.
Of course, you will also have to change over from Carb to FI.

  • Thanks. And I've read up about the Carb to FI conversion. The wiring for the fuel pump and the brain for the car will be the hardest, but the fuel injection will be a hell of a lot less cluttered than the many vacuum hoses it currently has.

One more thing to consider is the 86-87 d16a1 uses a vacuum advance distributor and the 88-89 advance is controlled by the ECU. If I were you I would get a full Integra harness which matches the engine and graft it to the 87 harness.
  • Alright. So are you recommending that i convert the advance to be ECU controlled or still keep it run by vacuum?
