'91 Civic Si: Turning a Junk Car into a Junk Race Car

538.jpg

So, at local forum's Christmas Party / Dirty Santa Get-together I got a car.

It was a '91 Civic Si and it didn't come with an engine...or most of anything else, lol. And it most certainly didn't look this ^^^ good when we got it!

The intention for this car from the get-go was to participate in the 24 Hours of LeMons.

The debute race was the full 24 hour race at Eagles Canyon in May 2012.

We were behind in getting the car prepped, so we ran the entire weekend with no gauges...not even a fuel gauge! ...and finished 11th overall!

YouTube Highlights from the sister Miata car.

This time around, we are much better prepared, and are hoping for a top-5 spot.

    Brake Booster Delete!

I haven't been around race cars enough to know an answer to this one but why would you remove the brake booster? More brakes is better, yes?
  • The booster doesn't allow you to push the brakes harder, it just makes it require less effort.

Less effort can mean less feel or modulation. We deleted it mostly because the booster was faulty and didn't want to source a replacement. We ran the first race in this car with the booster bypassed and liked the feel.

As an added benefit, I don't have to move the master cylinder to get the alternator out. :D
  • What all was required to simply delete the booster? Very curious because if you didn't spot cash for a new booster this sounds like it didn't take much! :encouragement:
  • Bolts to fasten the BMC in place (holes in the firewall are the same spacing).

A bolt machined to fit between the pedal and the BMC.

    Done.
  • Just a few finishing touches left...

Got the Tape-R on the ground.

    ...and finished up the interior.

Got to keep the drivers in check.

Do you have a 710 cap?

thats sweet, I wish I had time to hornet race
  • Thanks for the info! This dirty little race car is awesome! You should grab some sheet metal and make covers for the corner lights and blinkers!
  • Thanks for the suggestion. I've been looking at that myself...we still have some of the stop sign left over. :D

Im kind of awed by the masking tape Paint Job. Nice
  • Thanks. It actually looks surprisingly good circling the track.

Your welcome Sir! Stop sign themed exterior delete kit! I think a duct tape job would look good. But for the price of duct tape just a quick sand and spraying it with rattle cans might be cheaper, lol.
  • It wouldn't be the Tape-R anymore if it was painted!
  • ur not in awww come on really
  • I like the Tape R sticker lol

Another even coming up in a couple of weeks.

We added a splitter and put a different header on the car. No more 1.75" primaries. lol
