cavity filling with water behind rear wheels

I changed my taillight assembly out last night with one that wasn't cracked. I thought that might be the reason the cavity under the little tray in the rear cargo area was filled with water. I got all the water out and was expecting it to be dry this morning. Wrong. So I checked the other side, it was filled with water as well. I'll post pictures when I get home, but wanted to throw this up there in case anyone has had to deal with this in the past. There isn't much water in the area for the spare tire, just on each side.

Any help would be awesome, foggy windows are not tight :(

  • Do you have a roof rack?

Taillight gaskets and also the seam @ top of the D pillar where the rear hatch hinges are (can crack) would be good first places to check. Prior owner, of mine, stated same issue. After I painted my car I never had any problems as I resealed the taillight gaskets and those tiny hairline cracks at the corner/hinge area. The rain is def coming down here but I haven't had any issues (yet).

Please do report back, most folks seldom do.
  • So I suppose this could be cause for alarm. Just need to figure out how to remove the gutter strip, fix the issue and replace the gutter strip. Off to some searching...

  • Yep, that is where mine started. I ended up using a body urethane to fix it. Also check just aft of that a touch where it drops down by the hinges - SO many of these cars of little hairline cracks (some as large as what you just showed us) and the only place for the water to go is right inside and down the pillar (into the rear cargo area).
  • Went through this with a friends wagon I used that spray flex seal worked great used a dremel to remove old seam sealer cleaned of with paint prep wiped and taped off then sprayed flex seal on cracks
  • Have the same problem, have to check this as well, thanks!
