roof rack options - other makes

I'd love to track down the original wagon roof rack rails, but I don't see that happening and I'm not 100% interested in spending a ton of money.

I know a few guys on here have had luck with other cars rack rails. I saw the xterra ones, someone pulled some off a chevy blazer. I'm looking for something close to the wagon versions, but something current enough so I can get thule/yakima parts to throw on it. Pictures would be most helpful, but even just make/model/year would go a long way. Looking for something that isn't terribly hard to install. I know I'll have to deal with nutserts/etc, but not looking to get crazy, haha.

Thanks.

PS I did some searching, but I swear a million threads from the builds section came up, so if you have something bookmarked, pass it along :)

I can buy the same rack at any Pullapart for <$20.
The "oe" roof racks on wagons are just a generic US dealer accessory. In fact, the rails or "tracks" that mount to the roof are very similar to if not the same as the tracks Yakima offers for bare roofs.

I have used early- model Kia Sportage rails with success- not original type but is serving well.
Also have a couple of cars with Aerostar rails. They're identical to the "oe" ones, but longer. All can be customized to fit length and width-wise.
I've been Eyeballing Jeep cherokee rails lately because I have some Yakima towers to fit them. Basically any rack will fit as long as the rails can follow the curve of our roof. Isuzu Trooper for example won't work because the roof/ rails are too flat.
  • Your best bet is really to go to the junkyard and take everything off of a 1st gen (90 - 94) Ford Explorer/Mazda Navajo and enjoy. Check out my OLD pics from my 88' RT. These vehicles are littering every junkyard in the country and the length of the rails is PERFECT for wagon roofs - gives more flexibility than the original rails (which I agree, are nothing special). The install method of any junkyard rails can easily match the "quality" of the Honda rails with the nutserts/fender washers/plumbers putty/JB weld....etc Its very simple.

The explorer cross bars (I used on mine) can be cut and you can remove about 4" IIRC and reweld/brace...etc You can attach yakima junk to these are to the factory rails too .
