automatic stalling?

I'm new to this forum so bare with me please. (also sorry if this is the wrong thread )

Okay, so I'm about to get an automatic 89 D16A6 wagon for a trade. It's definitely worth the trade but anyways It's automatic and the guy said it stalls randomly...
I'm thinking it's three things it could be that would cause this: Fuel pump, fuel filter? and possibly a main relay. I'm not to sure if that would be the cause of the whole stalling randomly situation.
Any advice would help.

I don't know about the history of it but I know it does have 110,xxx original miles and it's pretty clean and well taken care of. When I get it I'm going to do a tune up on it. Cap, rotor, plugs, wires and oil change.

I would say give the following parts a clean: Throttle body, Idle screw & IACV. Hopefully that should fix the stalling issues.
  • I changed the spark plugs, wires, cap and rotor so far. It's a lot better idle wise.

When I test drove it I noticed that if you give it a lot of throttle (3/4th-full throttle) is bogs a little then comes back into it and it's only in first gear. every other gear seems just fine. I've drove it all day today and it hasn't done it to me as of yet.
  • Fuel filter is easy enough to change, could also be the pump dieing. I don't know if fuel pump can putter out of if they are a work/not work type of thing.
  • Right. I probably will change the fuel filter anyways.
This is the 2nd day ive drove it and still hasnt done It... Maybe the problem fix itself? Hopfully but will continue to worry me.
  • My fuel pump used to cut out, changed main relay, then took out the pump, it was new alright, but whoever tightened the ground screw had a limp wrist. That fixed it.
If you have the receipts for the car I'd look to see what all has been replaced.
  • I traded my crx for the wago and the kid that had it before me never replaced anything on it. Drove it how it ran. Also got information from him that he never changed the oil...only added more. He had it for 8 months but the owner before him was an older couple. They always maintained it. I'm going to change the oil first thing in the morning and fuel filter.
  • Update: it happened last night not just in first gear. As I was heading home last night from work I was going about 55-60 and it felt like the transmission didn't know if it should be in 4th or 5th gear but it wasn't shifting. So I'm thinking that's what that problem is. It feels like it shifts and jumps idle around 2 1/2 to 3 rpms. I can only assume that it's not getting enough fuel and it cuts out. So either fuel filter or fuel pump.
  • You sure it's not the tranny slipping? Have you checked the fluid levels? My RT has a dipstick that's pretty easy to get to.
  • I have not checked the tranny fluids. Will do asap.

I just wouldn't think the tranny slipping would cause the "bog/stalling" while I was in first gear and full throttle.
Maybe it could be that. I'll check the tranny fluid and replace the fuel filter in the morning and get back to you on that.
  • UPDATE:
It was doing a lot better so I never worried about it until today when it was pretty bad.

As I'm driving it'll bog out like it shuts off kinda but comes back into it. Feels like not enough gas but a few things it could be then that.
As I was driving it was fine for a few miles then bogged out and comes into it again. I barley can hit the gas peddle. It does it in any gear. If I stomp on it it does the same thing. I was in 3rd gear going around 30 mph and no matter what I did it kept bogging out on me every few yards I went and wouldn't go any faster without it bogging...
Also I noticed if I put the gas peddle about half throttle starting on a hill it will do the same thing.

Fuel pump hums when I turn the key on.
I've put a brand new fuel filter in (witch helped a bit untill now).

Could it be the coil in the dizzy or something clogging up?

I'm just stumped on this and never had an issue with this before. Also keep in mind it's an automatic rt4wd.

    Any Info would be helpful!
