Kate: new girl on the side

New EE in my life... 91 5spd w/ a/c

Supposedly 'lost compression' but was parked and left for dead. Tags say 2003. I'm seriously doubting it's been sitting that long, but didn't have time yet to look for registration or anything. It was sitting in some guys driveway for a while at least.

Bill picked it up thinking he would get it running. But decided to sell it to me. He made some moneys, and I got a super clean shell for a good deal.

Ideally I'd like to keep both of my wagons. Really depends on what it takes to get this one up to daily driving standards. I'm moving to Phoenix after Christmas, so this new one will be perfect for daily driver usage.

Big thanks to Bill for helping me tow it home too!

You should see it now ;) Just gave her a rinse as the sun was going down. But looks 100x better!

Spent some time over the last couple days trying to diagnose. Started with the usual suspects. Main relay to start. Tested it in Nancy and it works. Then went to the ignition coil. Tested a little low. Supposed to throw a code, so I checked the ECU, and got no lights what so ever. Which, I should because I've got a check engine light.

Thankfully Brian (hondawagonsts) had an extra distributor and ECU, and was so gracious to drop it off while I was at work last night. Unfortunately, even after trying a different coil and a different ECU today, it still didn't start.

After talking to bam tonight, I realize I really can't overlook the possibility of it being a bad motor. BUT, I also overlooked the fact that I can't hear the main relay or fuel pump. So, in the next day or two, I'm going to try and find a compression gauge. Just so I don't waste any money on parts when I still need a new motor. Hopefully compression checks out, and I'll swap in a new ignition switch.

While sitting contemplating in the car, I noticed this oil change sticker. Which made me feel good when I looked at the mileage. Then made me feel bad after I realized the date LOL

    99.jpg

There's only about 800 miles more on the odometer since the last oil change. Which confirmed what I saw under the valve cover earlier. Maintenance. Car was originally owned by a computer company in the Seattle area. So I'm still really really hoping it's not going to need a new motor (right away) lol

BUT, it confirmed my fear that the car had been sitting for exactly 9 years. Which could pose a handful of other problems. But I'm not going to get further ahead of myself...
  • Nice score on a nice panda wagon. Sometimes I wish I would have found a 2wd wagon just so engine swaps would be easier but there is no way i'm giving up the awd factor. If you think the main relay is bad you might just unhook it and bang it against something that will usually get them "unstuck". My crx had a bad main relay and when it wouldn't click I just squeezed it and it would work. I took it loose from the kick panel under there and let it dangle under the dash. I popped off the plastic cover that covers the internals and would just squeeze the internals long ways and it always started for me. I'm just a cheap bastard and never wanted to replace it. Plus it was a nice free anti theft device. All of my cars have some sort of trick to getting everything to work right.
  • BTW to date I have bought a half dozen or so 90 something model civics with bad fuel pump or distributers and after paying the $ needed to get them unbolted the main relay and smacked it on door sill and plugged it back in and drove off. Somehow that always pisses the po off.

^^did you read all that I wrote? Or just the first sentence? lol If it makes you feel better, I also tried the one from my other car and a spare. So three (3) different main relays were tried. No workie...

Killed 15 minutes before work today...

A little Palmolive, some water, and a bit of elbow grease got me a whole new bay! Don't be skirred kids! Clean engine bays are where it's at lol

I've got an extra valve cover I'll probably paint up this weekend. Also hit the motor with some engine cleaner. Not much oil on the motor thankfully. But still want it gone :)
  • If you can't hear the main relay or the fuel pump coming on you need to check the ignition. Not the tumbler but the electrical part behind the key. That is what powers the fuel pump and relay. I had one go bad in my EF hatch and my EF wagon. They are like 40 buck from autozone. Really really simple to Install. Let me know if that's it!!!!!!!!

Hoping this is my problem lol

Ran out of time to put it all back together tonight. I need to thoroughly clean the inside of my tank. Hopefully have it wrapped up by the weekend.
  • Looks like a score there. Good luck with it.
  • That looks fine. Put it back in...lol. We pulled one out that looked like that from a 91 civic sedan the other day.

Someday you'll understand our obsession with white...

Just busy with life. Been working six days a week. Then Sundays are my relax day where my buddies and I drink beer and watch football for ten hours. Due to light and cold temps I cant do jack when I get home from work. I usually only have 2-3 hours of daylight before work, and just haven't wanted to start tackling anything in that time (plus other things to do).

Today I made my first attempt at using electrolysis to remove the rust from inside my tank. Unfortunately it didn't work. I'm thinking my sacrificial piece of steel wasn't good enough. Also may be using the wrong battery charger. Was limited on time before work and had to give up angry lol I'm off Wednesday too this week, so I'm hoping to get a lot of stuff done. I've also got a handful of goodies to install, and some things to clean up should I need to occupy my time while she soaks. Fingers crossed I get this tank cleaned this week!

Here's the little bitch that's been slowin me down...

Here's my attempt (failed) at electrolysis. Though soaking for a couple of days did clean up the inside some.

Looked a lot worse in the beginning. I mean, a LOT worse. I've currently got a couple gallons of apple cider vinegar in it now. Gonna buy some more and fill her up tomorrow. Let it sit over the weekend then I should be pretty good to go.

I soaked my exhaust manifold heat shield bolts for 48 hours in apple cider vinegar. I was extremely impressed with the results. That's why I opted to do it on a bigger scale for the tank. I'll get some pics of the bolts tomorrow. I also painted the wheels. I'll snap some pics of them too.

Wow you weren't kidding that tank is terrible.
  • I've got a spare RT gas tank.... :)
