Need Help making it from Seattle to NYC! Suspension?

I spent about ten minutes searching the forums and couldn't find a good answer for me

My struts need to be replaced. I don't have much money to move so I am looking to buy the parts and then have someone install them...unless I can do it myself in an afternoon? I'm not looking to lower my car...just a cheap solution so i'm not bouncing all the way to New York.

I have a 1987 Civic Wagon 2WD.

What is a decent cheap strut for the front and rear? Where is a good place to find/order them?

thanks!
Josh

What's your time frame? You have many choices. All are close calls. You'll need to verify all the following .It's from what I remember.
    1)My choice if you got time.There's a new set of from Rockauto.com for $50 shp.$30 for 1.
2)Buy used from any 3g Civic or '86-'89 Integra.
    3)Buy new @ parts house.Probably $40 each.

    I have 2 weeks.

What do I need to verify. Sorry I don't completely understand your reply.

    Thanks for the response!

He's saying those figures are from memory, you should verify them for yourself.

Thanks. that makes a bit more sense.

I'm not exactly sure the right terms to be searching for on these sites however.

Like when look at rockauto what exact item am I looking for. I don't see a set of struts.

Thanks guys...i'm definitely new to this area. Just needing to be more specific so I don't buy the wrong parts to have someone else install.

The smartest thing you can do is throw this idea out the f'ing window immediately.

You're getting in over your head. And it's not worth the money to drive a $500 car cross country. Just buy another after you move and skip the headache.

This is coming from someone who has built cars on deadlines to move cross country multiple times. 9/10 it's just not worth it.

it's not to save my car. It's to get me across the US without spending money on another car or shipping. If I have to buy another one along the way that's worth the risk to me. Everything has checked out fine...i've driven this guy some distance over the last year I just want to get some new struts. I plan to get rid of the car once I get there. Just would like to ride a bit more comfortably on the way there.

    thanks
  • I just looked at rockauto.com - fronts are under $20, rears are $40. They aren't hard to install - should be easy for a shop, maybe 3-4 hours tops.
