High speed bogging?

Lately, my rt4wd has been bogging at highway speeds when cold. It recently got to the point where i can't drive up hills or above 50mph. It shakes violently as if it's missing, and will completely skip multiple revolutions at a time if i press the gas down. I've tested the coil, EGR, and advance on the distributor. Any ideas?

    Change your fuel filter.
  • What all have you checked??? And it only does it when it's cold no other time??? Do you hear any strange noise like popping or backfireing did this just start happening or has it just got worst??? Recommend: Check timing on the belt and ignition timing, it maybe ok but just check it. Tune up parts, fuel pressure. There is a lot to be looking at here. I need all the info you can give us to help you out better with out throwing a lot of money at it. Let us know

When you checked the distributor, did you inspect the wires and spark plugs? Are your injectors in good shape/not leaking? Check compression then engine timing. Start from the cheapest replacements and move towards the most expensive.

It used to do it only when cold. Now it's all the time. No noises, just shaking like there's no tomorrow. I had adjusted the timing and it ran beautifully until this misfire started to occur. It's definitely worse than before. I had gotten a new fuel filter about 9k miles ago (original one was leaky) but i'll check that tomorrow. It's got the original CVCC carb, so no injectors. I'm going to replace the PCV valve and spark plugs as well as cables soon. If you need any more information, ask away.

Also be aware that the timing belt can skip teeth and cause a misfire. If you adjusted before, it could have skipped again. That is what happened to my wagon on my last big maintinance. I had the same problem with bogging and low power. When its warmed up, the car may not miss as much because detonation is easier for the motor when its warmed up. When it gets worse, the cylinder will not detonate at all. It may miss at all speeds, running on only three cylinders, but you only notice it at high speed.

When I had this problem, I replaced the distributor, cap, rotor, water pump and timing belt. It ran amazing after. I never realized how little power I had prior because of the miss fire.

Alright. I'm getting a refurbished distributor in the near future. I'll check the timing belt and pump. Plus, i'll play it safe and get some new spark plugs and a wire set.

Also, does the vibration happen only at certain speeds on the freeway, around 50 to 70 MPH? If so, the vibration may be unrelated to the miss fire. It could be that your tires are out of balance, or you have warped rotors and pads.

That's what it started out as. But now it's at any speed, whenever the car feels like it. Very unpredictable. I'm positive that it's neither tires nor rotors.

  • Did you get this resolved ??? You can PM me if you like.

Finally changed the PCV. Changed the plugs, wires, cap and rotor. The car is much better, but still bogs after a few seconds of racing the engine to get up hills. Timing belt is on the correct tooth. I've noticed that the float level is always a bit low, even after adjusting it. I'm starting to believe that it's the fuel filter(as stated by Charb) and/or fuel pump.

mine was doing this same thing. ended up being the ignition switch. i guess the fuelpump or dizzy wasnt getting the voltage it needed through it.

its a cheap $20 part to rule out
  • Did all this change after the whole piningthing that you had up on the site or is this completly different issue??
  • x247nsx247xx247nsx247x Band Wagon
It seems to have happened all within a month-long period. I've also noticed that i can stop the bogging by putting in the clutch until the engine idles, then letting it back out. I've done it a few times, and will continue to for more validity. Let me know more about this ignition switch.

Why keep dicking around and not change your fuel filter?

I'm blown away you won't change a cheap part that will give you better mpg regardless...

I have lost all faith in you.

this...its a dirty cheap part and it takes like ten minutes to replace. You spent all that money on tune up parts when you could have started with the least expensive and gone up....why?
  • x247nsx247xx247nsx247x Band Wagon
Because i recently changed it only a few thousand miles ago. Plus, all of the parts i had changed, i already had. They were also ready for replacement. I haven't spent any extra money than i would've had to. I'm purchasing a new filter to replace it. I'll let you know how that goes.

I had a similar problem. First it was the dizzy, had a spare and got a lot better. Then I started having highway speed misses. I had a spare set of spark plug wires that I threw on, never had the issue since.

    Maybe mention that?

I had gotten a new fuel filter about 9k miles ago (original one was leaky).

I mentioned it in the post from 22 May 2012, 20:58

I need to quit drinking lol

But in all seriousness, some stuff still could be in there. Some nasties finally made it from your tank.

Alright. Thanks for the help. I appreciate it.
  • x247nsx247xx247nsx247x Band Wagon
Changed the filters. Car doesn't bog as much, but there's still a huge loss of power on the highway and going up big hills. Any suggestions?

    How bout this?

Bought new throttle linkage. Maybe the single best performance upgrade done to this wagon.
It was scary slow when entering freeway and highway on ramps before.
Now its safe and Revving, Wrapping, and Bwaaaping a whole lot better.

I'll Research that a bit. Thanks

Brand new distributor and balanced wheels. Car bogs only when being pushed hard to get up a hill. It's extremely suppressed, but it's still there. I had planned to adjust the valves soon. Would that help with this current problem?

I'll paypal you $5 if its not the ignition switch. I just have a huge hunch.
  • x247nsx247xx247nsx247x Band Wagon
No need to do that. Thanks for the offer though. I'll get to that as soon as possible.

Did you ever change the ignition switch? I'm having a very similar problem and wondering if that was the fix.
