Well, spent today in parts collecting (aka money-hemorrhaging)mode.
Bought another $300 worth of belts, hoses, calipers, rotors. Fluids etc.
Went to the Acura stealership for a few pieces, like the throwout return spring and distributor o-ring and MTF.
And still have to pick up clutch tomorrow. It's all good though. I went whole hog like this 4 years ago, and have driven the crap out of this thing all over the country without fretting. Good times!
Oh, and also changed out Mom's kitchen faucet. Juggling is fun!
Engine will be installed today! No recent pics- I had to delete my photobucket app. It hung up on this Kathy Ireland AmFam popup for like the last week. I kept thinking if I watch this whole ad just oooooooone more time...
anyway, the transmission is mated to the engine, new hoses, cleaned up and retaped harness, etc.
I think I'll cut the front trans mount ears off of the crossmember- I didn't know that I was supposed to four years ago! I also didn't bend the front flange of the second crossmember for T- bracket clearance. Hopefully that will go easier.
I'm switching from Hasport mounts to Avids (thanks rev) to try and change engine position. The version of mounts that I've been using had the engine further forward than I'd like, and higher.
I had all the help I needed, thanks. I'm pretty particular about how I want things to be, especially on my own car. A yard full of dummies don't get me there! In fact, after Prennro left my Dad came over and helped me set things up. As meticulous as I am, he still catches me out. I call him QC (Quality Control). Just when I think I'm done, he'll say "what about that bolt there?"
I hope one day to learn half of what he's already forgotten about cars. Every hour spent in the shop with him, wrenching and listening to jazz oldies, is a treasure. I'm storing up those memories.
I deleted and reloaded the photobucket app., let's try it out and bring this up to date:
As I was working on the clutch setup, I dug through my stock of flywheels to pick the best one. I noticed that some were lighter than others, specifically the two that I had labeled as b16. Look here.
b18 LS on the left, JDM b16a on right. My bathroom scale says b16 is two pounds lighter. (16 vs. 18 lbs. ) i installed the b16 one. I'm not a fan of lightened flywheels much, but this motor will eventually get a VTEC head. Why not a little quicker rev?
Speaking of Revs, he gave me his old Avid mounts earlier when he went to Innovatives. He wanted to raise his engine. I wanted to lower mine. Look at the differences:
The engine does sit a good bit lower, and overall I think I'll like it. (And have room for that b16 head!)
The only real snag was this:
Apparently when using these mounts, the Innovative AC adapter bracket doesn't quite work without some percussive maintenance. When I tried to bolt the compressor, it wouldn't quite go. After a little headscratching, I used a BFH and a long drift to dent the crossmember. Ahhhh, custom fit!
So now it's in there, all done except for charging the AC and tapping the new port for the NOS kit. It's running on the old PR4 with no problems, will get the modded ECU this week. For now, I'm going to go put the new rotors and pads on the front, then test drive :-)
Bam doing work to get the T-Bracket in place on his patented Bam-Tech Creeper.
Glad she's in and running again. Thanks for all the hands on tips and tricks. They will come in handy when I eventually do mine.
Avid Mounts > Hasport Mounts fo sho!
The mounts are definitely harsher. I think I may have some metal to metal contact on the rear mount. i'll have to fiddle with that. the buzz in the cab is pronounced.
But it pulls like a truck! I'm happy with the results.
AC is operational, new front brakes and rotors installed, had a couple of coolant leaks to chase down. Will drive it to work daily to shake it down. Leaving for the 2,000 mile trip to the Keys and back in 11 days!! I hope all that I need to do is the rear brakes and fuel pump.
You need to get rid of the factory crossmember traction bar makes all sorts of room. I cut and hacked mine to death to fit a big tube header and it still rubbed so I went with a traction bar setup lots of room for the a/c compressor and everything else. Only thing I will say is if you buy one buy a good one because the cheap ebay ones rattle loose and kill hime joints all the time.
It's nice to see a comparison with hasports. It sat my LS super low compared to Erins b16 with hasports. The Innovatives are nice though, and I downgraded an insert level from 75a to 65a.....glad they worked out for the most part!
Which is softer, 65 or 75a? I forget. Might invest in softer ones.
Can you see the wear on the rear mount in those pics? That's where I'm wondering about. I may pull it and cut off the corners. Note the different shape of the Hasports.
i saw the motor mounts and was kinda shocked Bam, gonna lower something ..?
thought i never seen a lowered motor then remembered you lowered the motor in Goldie also ..
but i guess its all got a reason & purpose or you would not of done it..!
Just lower in the engine compartment by a inch or so.
As I said before, vibrations were really harsh. Sure enough, look what I found
solid metal to metal contact at the t-bracket and rear mount. No wonder it buzzes! Pulled it back down and whittled upon it. Here you can see the imprint from just 60 miles of driving since the swap
And after clearancing
Here's a shot of an unaltered bracket next to mine
and an after picture, reinstalled
also, upon closer scrutiny I found another contact area here, at the left mount. I was able to shim the mount in the pocket with a washer.
i wonder if these were rubbing like this in the Cream Machine? I thought it was just the stiffer urethane that made it harsher. Hmm.
I did try to swap the 62a biscuits from the Hasports into the Avids. No dice. They are just enough different so as not to fit.
Before, I was considering switching back to the Hasports before the Florida trip. Now, with these adjustments, it's just like old times. Just a touch stiffer.
Oh, it's a huge difference. Night and day.

Just like old times except with an additional scalded ape under the hood.

Now you just need a better highway gear, to try and get a few more mpg's.. ( taller tires )

b or d? VTEC or not?
well on a positive note at least I did not wake up screaming with the visuals
and all I want is my rex running.

You finally caved in

so are you having a swap party for Cnote..????
some local wagons in attendance ..???
gotta snap me a picture of Hoss's wagon beside Goldie .....
I should have it cranked this evening sometime. There are a few things I want to tweak with the new mounting position.
man where are them other cats @ .....
oh im sure you will have spin marks leaving garage by sun up .....
uhm how do u tweak mounting position ... (aint it simple put bolts n them itty bitty wholes then motor sits n one spot )
LMAO

Y'all go tell your Dad how you feel about him.

I ended up using a innovative ac compressor mount. It actually raises higher on the block than the stock location.
Gives it just enough room to be ok.
RBW are you running avid mounts ore something different? The avid mounts really sit the motor lower and further back than the Hasports.
All great info tho!:encouragement:
They look nothing like the new ones.

How does it ride now?
