Strange Pinging?

I've recently adjusted the timing on my 87 rt4wd (was about 20 degrees behind) and i noticed that now whenever i push the pedal down a decent amount, a pinging noise is heard. Would this be fixed with a valve adjustment? I'd love to get some feedback. Thanks

I would check static timing. If it was that far retarded and running ok, but pings when you adjust to apparent spec, the belt may be off a tooth or two.

bring timing back a little. or start running premium. your issue is detonation.
  • Just a question what was the reason for the timing issue? And I would refure to the manual for the spec. I think you need to pull the vacuum lines off and plug them, and then adjust timing according to the book spec. If you have any questions just ask. Hope this helps :)

Thanks. Is there any other way to stop this pinging without retarding timing or running premium? Spark plugs perhaps? My appoligies. I'm a bit new at this.
  • You can try it. But I have never got that worked out for me
  • Did you adjust the Cam timing or the Ignition Timing? Or both.

Check and adjust cam timing first, then check and adjust ignition timing. One may have been adjusted out of whack to compensate for the other.

I only adjusted ignition. Thanks for the advice.
