Rev's 1992 XJ Cherokee

I picked this up today, as some may know I work with a Jeep company. So it's almost natural I end up with one.

Rundown:

1992 Laredo
-4.0L/auto
4x4
HP Dana30/Dana 35
Tow Package
Has 235k on the body today but has 80k on the '95 engine.

Needs:

Driver tail light.
Passenger door hinge tack welded.
Radio.
Misc. hardware for the dash/interior.
Brakes.

The tires that were on it were practically slicks and were puny 205/60/15s and I got some 255/70/15s mounted and balanced for $130. The wheels weren't balanced originally and after I got that taken care of it drove straight as an arrow.

On to pictures!

Im sure with your parts access this will be looking boss in no time!
Isnt it nice having a car you dont have to dodge potholes in?

Also how the hell did you get 4 tyres for $130!?
I just got some tyres I own swapped off one set of rims onto another and it cost me $125!
  • RevmaynardRevmaynard Council Member
Haha, they're used! This local place called Tire Latina does used tires for $25 a piece usually. lol
  • NZ-DB8RNZ-DB8R Moderator
Cant complain for that price! New set of tyres would usually sting me just under $1000 for something semi decent.

Whats the plans for this? Lift, big bullbars and some spotlights etc?
  • RevmaynardRevmaynard Council Member
I have my own plans....but we'll see what unfolds with stuff at work. I have the only 84-96 model XJ....so new parts usually need a test fit or two before we put them into production. ;)
  • NZ-DB8RNZ-DB8R Moderator
Oh no, testing new products? For free? However will you manage  I guess they will need to be tested for at least 5years as well, just to be sure they last. By then you may as well keep them

Sounds like a sweet place to work

You can't very well sell a used part in our line of business.....sooooo I might end up with a few goodies. :D

    Nice pick up dude!

Thanks man! I'm installing a throttle body spacer and an intake from my work today if the rain holds off long enough. Scored a set of 5 of our d-window wheels from a coworker with some worn 31s for $75 too!

Installed a Rugged Ridge intake and throttle body spacer, they aren't really made to work together in the sense the isolator won't meet the head shield. But I finagled it to work. Sounds good and the throttle response is noticeably better!

Thanks fellas! I have more in store!

I installed some Rugged Ridge vent shades. Also put in two new hatch struts (only had one worn one) and a double cup holder. Must haves! A great deal on the front half of a lift fell in my lap, so it looks like I'll be looking into some leafs for the rear soon.

    Meanwhile a little wagon waits......

That handbreak looks a little awkward now? Or is it not as bad as it looks?

I guess one never really uses a handbreak enough for it to be a bigger issue than having nowhere to put your cups
  • RevmaynardRevmaynard Council Member
It's not so bad, it's more inconvenient holding all of my drinks! Haha I'm just waiting to find a place that I can do work on the wagon at, I've got parts and such ready to install! Haha

that hand brake cup holder is about the only one for the xj's.

It was more a pain in the arse in mine since it was 5sp.

your saving grace is yours in auto.

easiest way is also adjust your handbrake cable under the xj and the handbrake will not go up as far.

    Already adjusted. :)

The alternator went out today. I charged the battery fully right before I left work and ran it off of the battery the whole way home. Thankfully I was already going to be putting a new battery in it this weekend and got a never used sample alternator from work! I'll probably put it in tomorrow after work or on Saturday morning.
  • i take it you dont do much off-roading ? i need to post up my jeep ...
  • RevmaynardRevmaynard Council Member
Not currently seeing as I've only owned it since Saturday. I've done a bit of wheeling at work before though.
  • seeing as how you live in the south like me . you know that filter is the worst thing you can have off road . looks nice . but the wrst thing you can have in the mud. i learned the hard way . but jeep looks nice like mine did when i got it now its um well yeah lol
  • RevmaynardRevmaynard Council Member
Eh, not really that ''red''. Haha I don't think I'll ever go strictly mudding, mostly trail riding. I might be doing some driving for work in it in the future for shows/events, so I'd most likely keep it installed for that reason. But with the right amount of lift it shouldn't matter. ;) Post pics of your Jeep though, I'd love to check it out!

Today I replaced the alternator, battery, battery terminals, cap, rotor, plugs, and wires. It runs so much better, topped off the tank and and replaced a few fuses as well.

This was the BEST plug out of the 6.

Love these jeeps. My first car car was 90 jeep comanche that we got with a blown 4.0 and 5 speed. Found a cheap 4.0L HO that thing hauled ass. I know you will have lots of fun with this thing.
  • RevmaynardRevmaynard Council Member
Thanks man! A Comanche was my first choice, but they've actually become fairly rare in recent years. So of course I went for the next best thing. :)
  • ludemanludeman Wagonist
Ya when ever a comanche pops up forsale its always the 4 cyl 2wd and thats barely ever. I had too much fun with it and the rear end went out, replaced it and it was never the same. So decided to move on, but that was when I was 15 and now I want another one.
  • RevmaynardRevmaynard Council Member
I'd love to see a build of one on the board. ;) Stick with the mid-89 to 91 model and you'll be set. That way you won't have a GM 2.8 or the crappy Peugot transmission!

I got my tag this morning and drove it in to work. It runs a lot smoother now with that basic tune-up. I bought a coolant temp sensor, new wipers, and a cargo storage bag for it. One of the ball studs on the body portion for the hatch is broken, so I'm going to look into that so I can get the hatch struts installed soon. I ordered a set of 1" poly spacers yesterday to go with my ORV 3in front lift parts, and I'll probably order some Pro-Crap 3.5-4in leafs soon.

  • RevmaynardRevmaynard Council Member
Haha that one I had hanging from the hatch to help get rid of the smell of redneck. It just happened to fall when I was putting everything in the hatch.

Thanks man! How long has this ''soap and water'' thing been around? Never really heard of it!
