Custom RT4WD Header Mod

I damaged my stock down pipe last night coming home - thought it would be fun to hit a 4x4 piece of wood in the middle of the road. Luckily it didn't damage my oil pan, so that a positive. Here is the damage.

Here are the pics of the modified 4-2-1 down pipe I made today. This was a generic header I found on craigslist. Nothing special.

I have a slight exhaust leak from the gasket between the two header pieces, but other than that it feels like it has more flow than before. Now I just have to get my ZC cam and y8 intake manifold installed.

  • looks pretty good...i need to do this but i just havn't had time. where did you go about picking up manifold piping?

Everything I used was from that header. Didn't use any other piping.
  • Looks good.

Here is my contribution. Cheap piece of Egay SH@#. I however chose to open it up to 2.5 inches at the bottom instead of retaining the smaller diameter 2-1 pipe.

  • Good idea!! I've had a few guys ask me about fitting a header on the RT4wd and now we know its possible. I would only add one thing to this...I'm not saying the mig welds will fail but I belive a tig weld would be a proper weld for the stainless piping most headers have.

Good stuff! I have a similar header to modify for the Fool'sGold project.

just use stainless Mig wire when welding stainless tubing. 308L would be the proper wire with argon shielding gas.

    project looks really good however.

Great pics. This will make it real easy to show a muffler shop what needs doing. What if one had a ceramic coated header? Is there a way to remove the coating so it can be modded? Just wondering, because I have a coated DC header I could use.

    ^ +1
Was thinking of selling my DC and getting and ebay set liek they did.

just sand the coating off...it will come right off with some 320/220 grit sand paper....then you can cut and weld on it all day long.

^^^^^ Thank you for the answer. I was gonna start messing with sanding it, but I'd be out some loot if it didn't pan out. Now if I could figure out how to get this buggy to cruise at 65 w/o being over 3000 RPM.

Here's how mine turned out, took it to a shop.

I would have liked the bend to be a little straighter, i'm just happy it's done. I now have more motivation to learn how to weld.

anyone running an aftermarket header that works? seems like there is space and i saw one here, company is hedman

    http://www.andysautosport.com/honda/1984_1987_civic/performance/headers/hedman/hedm00233674.html

Everyone using 2.5" piping from header back for the most part? Only ask because I have an old exhaust off my srt4 that I could use for cheap and its already mandrel bent :)
  • Sorry to bump such an old thread, but was wondering if anyone had any measurements as to where they cut the header and where they moved everything to, etc. Wanting to get a header and have someone modify it, so measurements if available would be a big help.

I just picked up a Private Label MFG header for a D-series and I think the modification will be pretty simple. This is a no PS and no AC header.
