OG steering wheels...

So first off big ups to billboard for spawning this idea in my brain. After I saw his restoration of an OG Honda steering wheel I went on a hunt. And look what I found :)

Now I plan on restoring all of them and keeping one for myself. I figure I'll throw up how I did it and if anyone shows interest in one of the other two I'd make a sale ad over in the market place.

First step is take it completely apart, sand down to bare metal, and mask.

Then I cleane it with wax/grease remover and sprayed metal etch primer.

851.jpg

And then a bit of regular primer to fill any minor imperfections.

That's where I am right now. I have not decided what color I want to paint it yet. I'll figure that out later. Feel free to ask questions and such. If you're interested in purchasing a finished one from me let me know and I'll make a for sale thread so nobody gets angry for selling things out of a regular thread.

I have not test fit this yet, I'll do it later tonight or Tomorow to see if they even fit the wagon.

  • So you found some 1st gen Civic steering wheels...how were the cars? Just wondering. It should fit on the wagon. I don't remember what I did with my factory wheel from my '78 wagon but it's not very comfortable (to me anyways) as it's a hard plastic with no cushion.

one was super destroyed, mold on the inside and out. rust everywhere. looked like it had been sitting for years upon years. The other two were in pretty decent condition really. I REALLY want one but i cant do it right now, just got jane back up and running cant go for another car anytime soon haha.

anyways, i got one completely done and its just drying right now. i decided to go with gloss black because it was easiest and quickest for me. I spent about four hours on this first one doing the restore. Everythign is cleaned up except the center pad piece. I will clean that up tomorrow and hopefully have time to get it all put back together and get started on the other two.

For the current updates, i Decided to go with just straight black for this one. Unlike most i dont like to use spray paint at all. Im a painter and i try to use automotive paint whenever possible. I think it gives you a better finish in the end.

Mixed up some clear and sprayed it on.

sorry for the garbage pictures, they're just my iphone shots. once its done and put back together i'll break out the D300s and get some good shots. What do you do when you dont have a booth to bake your clear coat? You hang it in front of the woodstove for the night :)

In a visual measurement I'd say they're about an inch bigger. I'll take a photo of one on top of the other as well as side by side...anybody know how to get the plastic cover off the wagon steering wheel to take it off? I havnt gone out to the garage to look at it yet.
  • to take the steering wheel off? the little symbol in the center pops out if i understood you right

  • <3 thank you sir! i do have a question for you though....

how would one go about re doing the leather on the outer part of the wheel...IE where the hands go? i think i'll leave mine black rubber simply cuz i like the look but i'd be interested to see how i'd go about re-wrapping the outside in some kind of leather or something...

I need a larger diameter wheel to help with my lack of power steering, but I'm not crazy about that style.

A long time ago our Dad stitched a leather steering wheel cover onto a burgundy caddy we owned. As I recall it looked and felt good.
