on AVERAGE i get only 250.. highway or city. 250 no matter what. its probably because im cruising at 80 mph.

  • I get about 250 on my 91 AWD 5 Speed, and about 300 highway on my 89 automatic. Both are in miles per hour as I imported both from the USA.

i used to only get 240 per tank. then one day i decided to drop the car a bit more, so i turned the coilovers some, and i ended up getting 320 per tank. but tired of eating up my tires, i had to raise the wagon back up. i've yet to see how this affects the mileage.

i'm usually on highway, cruising at 70mph

My best to date is 440 miles with a 2wd wagon with manual transmission. Driving at 60mph on highway.

Interesting thread. I just got mine on the road, and first mileage check netted only 23mpg. Of course this included some idling, tuning, spillage changing fuel filter, etc. Have done a full tune-up and replaced cat. so we'll see.

The catch is this is a '90 2wd 5spd, the trans being from an HF crx. I'm not sure if consumption is adversely affected by "lugging" the engine. In 5th @ 60mph tach shows <2000 rpm. I can comfortably cruise in 3rd on highway.

Oh, and 125 miles on about half a tank-according to gauge.

What size is the tank? 5.4 gallons filled it back up. All these miles were off-highway, 16 mile commute to work.
  • wagodizzlewagodizzle Council Member and EDM expert
the tank is about 12 gallons big, but the gauge will show "empty" with still two gallons left, so thats why your tank took 5.4 gallons with the gaguse showing it halfway empty... if that makes any sense

i get about 30 or more in my 88 rt4wd city and highway.
when ever i fill up i put in about 10 gallons and go a little over 300.

i fill up with 91 octane and i drive it pretty hard. my car has 208,000 miles on it. it burns a little oil. i did a tune up a couple months ago and that really helped.

    Why?
Higher compression ratio than stock? Forced Induction? Really advanced timing?

    91 is a waste bro!

Hi, go see this web site: http://www.gassavers.org/
A lot of info on fuel economy.

With my summer tire just installed, I should hit the 450 miles marks with the wagon. Btw, my rpm is at 3000 rpm @ 60mph. With your HF transmission, you should have better mileage than me, since you are running below 2k rpm @ 60 mph.

Anything over 9:1 compression really should run on the higher octance petrol..

I beg to differ...although it might stem from the RON vs MON way of calculating octane.
Besides, isn't the wagon around 9:1? (USDM...no ZCs)

My original point being that 87 was recommended by the manufacturer.
*Using a higher octane is a waste of money unless you need the additional resistance to detonation.*
  • HaydzHaydz Moderator
It very well could have something to do with RON vs. MON.

I belive your 91 is around the same as our 95/6 octane here.

I understand the minimum available in Japan is 95/6 RON and therefore their ECUs are tuned for it.

So i guess really its not the compression that matters too much its the ECU that you run?

Our '90 AWD used to get 27-29mpg mixed driving.

Now with the Y8 mini-me we get 32-35mpg. Worth the swap right there (especially since I did it due to a timing belt snap, and the old head "may" have been toast anyhow). Easy 33mpg average.

It gets mid-grade octane. (Y8/A6 mini-me is in the neighborhood of 10.3:1 8) ). and the block has 201,000mi (~90kmi on the Y8)

I actualy got the best tank yet while the wife was out of town (it's her car mostly), and I was NOT driving it gently - - about 1/2 the tank was used rallying up and over Berthoud Pass on the way snowbaording (up to 12,000ft from the 5,500ft my house is at). that was a 35mpg tank!!

New clutch is in now, and all new ball joints go in tonight (then alignment). She'll drive like a dream soon. :D

    i got ~450 miles a tank in my '91 2wd.

i averaged 41 mpg cruising between 70-80 mph on an up and down hilly interstate. i was pretty impressed =)

    whatever! :x ^^

lol 250 makes me wana get another car

OK, displaying my ignorance here: WTF is a mini-me? Sounds like a head swap? 2nd tank I got 29 mpg, included a 120mi. highway trip to a road century Saturday with a couple work commutes. Will the MPFI conversion help with mileage? Really want to keep it simple, and not concerned with power/speed. This thing AIN'T fun to drive with the HF in it.
  • KomancheKomanche Band Wagon
me about 250 (400km). But I am very often using the power of the car
  • bam-bambam-bam Council Member
29 mpg again. I haven't checked the timing yet, need to do that when I can figger out why my timing light don't work. Being a diesel tech, don't use it often...

oh, on a related note: someone told me today that CRXs came with 12" wheels. True? I was thinking putting smaller 13s on to help with overgeared problem. if hf had 12" rims plus way lighter would explain a lot in the way of performance.
  • jpciiijpciii familEE
I don't think any crx came with wheels that small, and a mini me is a 1.5 liter non-vtec d-series block with a vtec head (usually from a d16z6 or d16y8) They can make some impressive power, but can be tricky to get right so do your research first.

Just a point of clarification...its any non-vtec d-series block with a vtec head. Not specifically a 1.5. If you can stay off the vtec lobe, it will get 40+ mpg easy.

Yes.PLUS power.Your $$$ might be better spent on a front spoiler/side skirts and or a bellypan for increase mpg.

13s.The CRX HF are very lite plus looks really good without the center cap.Another good choice are the '92-'95 VX whls.

Did you put in the HF flywhl too :?:
  • jpciiijpciii familEE
I thought the name "mini"-me was because you used a smaller block than the 1.6 liter block that vtec engines came with... I know that other markets had smaller vtec engines, but didn't the mini-me swap start in the US where only the 1.6 liter engines where vtec? Just like the mini-me character in the Austin Powers movies... it(he) is a a smaller version.

on topic, I don't know how many miles I get per tank, I never let it get that low... but I've been getting high 30's in gas mileage. I'm pretty sure that I can break into mid 40's if I keep the speed around 55-60 mph.

EDIT: I have a mpfi swap and get 36/39.

umm... no. What's an HF flywheel? Heavier? I really didn't start out looking for the HF, just bought it for $80 from a guy who had swapped Integra stuff into his crx. I may put the original trans back in ( needs input shaft bearing at least)

I've been getting about 270-320 per tank, 10 gallons or so, depending on how much city/highway and mountain driving I'm doing. In the city I'll get about 26 and it's more like 33 in the mountains. I put 85 in and it doesn't have any issues with pinging at a mile high.
  • davensdavens familEE
What's sad is that I remember this from 1997ish
you're assuming there was a decision or logic behind the name but it was a stupid pop culture joke that just stuck ...the first mini-mes were happening at the same time the first Austin Powers movie came out. And coincidentally the LS-Vtec concept was just gaining popularity.
So you had the larger, initially more popular LS/Vtec and than the smaller, almost absurd D-series attempt...mini-me was
It has nothing to do with the displacement, just that its a "small" artificially created D-series frankenstein type of setup.
