4x4 info needed, pre-real time

Hey guys.
I just picked up a cherry 85 with push button 4x4 and I would love a bit more info. Without a VC I'm worried about breakage after modding with bigger tires and a lift ect.
I know the front and rear have the same ratio. Does anyone know how close the ew trans is to later D series trans? I'm a turbo guy through and through and have a nice little built A6 mini-me with one of my custom turbo setups just begging to be used. Its either swap a RT trans in or cut/weld/modify the EW trans bellhousing.
I do plan on modding the drivetrain to fit a VC or center diff somehow later down the road. Even though I will lose the 4x4 I think the slippage is worth the peace of mind.
So any kind of info you guys have on the ew 4x4 stuff I would love to hear it.
