Very Odd Clutch issue ( car moves with the clutch push in )

so yesterday while i was driving and went some where to eat, and after i was done eating went to start the car with my foot on the clutch and started the car and it would not go in to gear. So i turned the car off and put it in 1st gear and started it with it in gear and it took off like the clutch was engaged and moving the whole car forward with the clutch in and brakes on.

so my question is where or what do i look at from here??

some people have said to look at the pedal assembly- ITS FINE

does any one have or have had the same issue???

any help would be great

Thanks

Justin

The pedal assembly problem is very common, you're right to look there first.

Does the clutch feel different? Harder/easier etc?

Your clutch is not fully disengaging. Let's list all of the possible causes:

    Broken pedal/pivot
    faulty cable
loose or broken cable bracket at transmission
    broken release bearing shaft
    broken release bearing spring
    broken release bearing
    faulty clutch cover (pressure plate)
Faulty disc/debris from disc stuck between flywheel/disc/cover

As you can see, only the first 3 items can be eliminated before removing the transmission for further troubleshooting.

9.23765 out of every 10 complaints like this one on this car are found to be caused by a failed or failing pedal assembly.

thanks for the heads up the pedal assembly is fine nothing wrong there......

cable is in tact and in one piece

cable bracket is fine as well

i truly think its the pressure plate to be honest

for now i dont have time to work on it and its just sitting in the garage and its being put up for sale as i dont have time to work on putting a new clutch in it
  • I had a similar problem in my HB a few years back. Coming from the VW world, I suspected the cable had failed. LSS (Long Story Short) the cable had suddenly & mysteriously gone out of adjustment. Readjusted and all was well (and continued to be so). A visual inspection of the cable really won't tell you much. BTW, something I learned from driving old VWs, it is possible to drive without a clutch, just not a lot of fun.

I had a clutch fork bend.. caused the same issue... I just kept adjusting the cable till I finally had to fix the issue, cause I couldn't change gears. The clutch fork is what the pedal and cable are actually using to engage and disengage the clutch.

With this one coming and going randomly, I'm thinking broken bearing ear/s.

it needs a disc, pressure plate and throw out bearing because nothing else on a Honda wears out. also check were the throw out bearing rides on the transmission, it rides on aluminum and can create a groove and not travel correctly.

p.s. also resurface your flywheel or clutch will chatter on take off. If it has a pilot bearing in the fly wheel replace it.

still interest in selling let me know.
  • Several years ago I had an '81 Accord HB, loved it! One of the springs in the clutch popped out and got hooked in the pressure plate. This happened because the tabs that retain the spring wore out. These springs are a dampening system for the friction disc allowing smoother engagement. Every time the clutch is engaged, these springs compress and eventually wear out the metal tabs. Other than a worn out disc, this is the only clutch failure I have personally experienced with my Hondas- 3 Accords and one Civic Wagon, all manual trannys. The wagon is by far my favorite, mostly because it is not carburetted :)

    Good luck!

Mine is doing the same thing. Did you ever solve the issue?

Looks like we never really heard the solution on this one.

Check the pedal assembly. It really is the most common failure.

most likely the pressure plate or throwout bearing i had a honda sedan that did the same thing and i replaced the entire clutch kit and resurfaced the fly wheel and never had the problem again.
  • Same problem here. The clutch and linkage cable looks fine. I'm going to take the transmission down this week. I will let you guys know what I see and what the problem is.

The problem was the clutch. The middle piece of the clutch snapped off. So that's why it will do that.
