TDC on 1985 Honda civic wagon

Im about to tackle the job of changing the timing belt, water pump, and belt tensioner on my wagon. I have changed the timing belt on my brothers 1992 civic hatch. The only thing that is stumping me is how to get TDC because this d-series engine is a 12 valve and the spark plugs are horizontal and now vertical. Can I just undo the #1 spark plug and stick something in there to check for TDC like the other d series engines?

Find the TDC mark on the crank pulley, and line it up with the pointer. With the valve cover off, you can see whether #1 is on compression or exhaust stroke by looking at the valves.

If the belt is still intact, just replace the belt without moving anything!
  • I replaced the timing belt, water pump, tensioner, and serpentine belt. What I did is found the TDC then used a pen and drew lines on the old timing belt and just transferred them to the new belt. Took me about 2 1/2 hours with my buddy to do it

Your '85 is a CVCC and because of that, you cannot find TDC from the spark plug hole.
