reverse gear REALLY NOISY

my reverse gear on my 1990 rtawd is reallyyy noisy any suggestion?? sounds like metal on metal?? all forward gears are fine all the way up to speed at 70+ and the Super low is GREAT TOO ..... just the noisy reverse gear

    i know honda reverse gears whine ..... but like i said metal on metal ONLY IN REVERSE

    I haven't driven an RT manual trans yet, but I remember seeing periodic threads about whiny reverse gears. Hopefully yours is just routine.

    I hope that before too much longer I can speak from experience...

    again... i know honda transmissions in reverse whine thats normal to mee...... but metal on metal in reverse in not normal and once again all the gears going forward are fine at any speed

    It is your reverse idler gear. Reverse in Jane was super loud and chunky when I bought her.

    It would be the one that's chewed up in this photo. Reverse should have a whine, but nothing super crazy.

    Now questions as well

    A) what causes it to get like this?

    B) how long can it be driven on with out hurting any thing if u never use reverse?
