Bogging When Warmed Up. HELP!!!

ok, so i have an 88 rt with the stock d16a6 in it. i have recently pulled the motor and did an entire gasket set on it. it was put back together and dropped back in just recently. It will start right up everytime and runs and drives great when cold or first started. As soon as it starts getting close to normal operating temp its looses power and starts bogging really bad. Mainly in the 1000 to 3500 range. the exhaust seems louder and it smells like gas. the idle drops low to like 450. The timing looks right. ive cleaned out the sensors on the intake. heres a list of new parts put on...

-Fuel Filter
-NEW Distributor
-Plugs
-Wires
-Thermostat
-02 Sensor
-Injectors(Junk Yard)
-Timing Belt
-Complete Gasket Kit

i really wanna get the wagon goin strong again, any ideas?? Thanks!

Sometimes vacuum leaks around the intake manifold dont show themselves until things really get warmed up and start to expand.
After the car is warmed up and starting to run poorly, spray some brake cleaner around the intake manifold. If the engine starts to rev up, you have a vacuum leak.

Can I ask why you replaced your injectors?

Also, you said timing looks good. Did you double check both cam and ignition timing?
  • I just had the same problem. Identical - felt like it had 0 power until after 3500 or so RPM.

Turned out my timing was off a tooth. I must've been looking at the timing marks at the wrong angle or something when I put the engine back together, but it was definitely off. I ended up fixing it the other day in about an hour and a half with the engine still in the car. Kind of a PITA, but it feels like a completely new vehicle now.
  • did a compression test today and not good... very low numbers. 120-1 100-2 120-3 80-4 :( i added about a half cap of oil and tested again and got 140-1 120-2 150-3 90-4 so the rings are bad. but is still very low leading me to believe the head is warped or head gasket is bad. well i have a completely torn apart obd1 dohc zc. ill be swapping that in as soon as i can fund the build...
  • I would triple check your timing! If the timing is off by a tooth(s) then the valves could be open when the bottom end is at TDC...causing a loss of compression and low compression test #'s. since ALL of the cylinders are low, that leads me to believe something is off in the timing department. before you tear it all down, triple check that everything is set correctly to the Honda Service Manual. Compression numbers will ALWAYS go up when you add oil...its when it DOESNT go up, that you have a problem. Could be valve adjustment issues, timing issues, etc. triple check mechanical timing, and do a leak down test to positively identify the issue. Good Luck!

^^ Agreed. Recheck your cam timing before you go tearing the whole thing apart.

Also, if you do a leak down test, it will tell you where the leak is.
