Passing BAR in california with B20B

Ok so i took my wagon to the BAR and they told me to fix a few things like the timing and the ignition idle bla bla bla... did all of that but ran into problems with these... The person that helped me put the motor in the car said that there would be no o2 sensor and that is why my check engine light is on. i looked all over and from what i can see there is no o2 sensor anywhere on the pipes from the heads to the muffler. If hes right and there isnt one is there a way i can maybe drill a hole and place one?

Second question is i have a aftermarket fan that i turn on with a switch in the cocpit... i didnt install it and have no idea where the factory fans wires conected. The guy at the BAR said that he will not pass it unless the fan is hooked up to the car and operates when the car gets to hot. How would i co about hooking it back up to the cars computer?

Any help would be much appreciated.

  • Your car must be running very very rich with no O2 sensor!

It should be located on the lower half of the OEM exhaust manifold just before it meets the car facing upwards. If OBD0 still you may require 2 single wire O2 sensors, I am not familiar with B20B's though

Your fan switch should be either on the thermostat housing if OBD1 motor or if OBD0 motor then it will be next to the Oil Filter on the back of the block, there will be a round resin filled thing with two posts sticking out of it.
  • You can always get an aftermarket fan controller. Mine was 40 bucks and I can set it to whatever temp I want. Got it from Summit and it works great. Also has a fail safe to a switch inside the truck so I can also turn it on manually if I feel like it.
  • Ok soooo i got most of the stuffs done i needed to get done... now i just need to get the check engine light off and make the after marker fan operate by temperature so thats what ill be doing tmo

Flexalite makes a fan variable speed controller that can be installed and custom set to what ever temp you want within a certain range. I have the dual fan set up in my 4runner and it came with a temp sensor and control module with a dial so it kicks on at what temp I set it to. If you have AC you can connect it to your condenser unit and the fans will kick on when you run the AC. flexalite fans are sweet.
  • Ya i ended up buying something like that. And it works like a charm. I found out that the people who swapped the motor didn't put holes of an o2 sensor lol. So this weekend my mission will be to drill a hole in the pipes somewhere and weld a nut that an o2 sensor will screw into and hopefully all my problems will be fixed and i can concentrate on making it look pretty.
  • Are you running a full b20 setup, motor and all the bolt on emissions?
or is it a combo of integra intake, ecu and such?

From my past experiences I could not get the b20 refed due to the civic being a hatch and the b20 "crv" being a suv. cali ref just said NO, I had to go back to b18. i have heard the refs vary on what they will approve and deny.

I will be watching your build- good luck with the BAR
I really like the b20- ran a b20z for a couple months couple years back and it is definitely a fun motor.

I had heard this before too. The B20 is from the CRV, which was classified as a "light truck" so BAR wouldn't allow it to swap over. However, It has been years since I had read that. Maybe it got changed.
  • Well that is the rule but they said they would let me keep the motor in the car because it is in some way kinda like an suv. But yes its a combo of the b20 and the integra emissions. They also told me that they were leaning on doing away with that rule so maybe you can swap one again!
  • HUMMM i would not mind a b20 in the old rt. thanks for the info i will have to look into that
  • just to clear things up about the whole b20z...im a smog tech and the rule that i know thats active to this day is that a light truck or and truck motor may not be in a passanger vehicle so you can have any b in the wago as long as you have all the right emission to that motor but the crv motor cant be refd since its a light truck

yeah i was also told that when i tried to bar my wagon so i said screw bar and went b20vtec lol
  • Poor Cali. All these pollution regs and the air quality still sucks there.

I rode my VFR there last year and when I descended into the San Joaquin Valley via Yosemite, the sky turned brown.
  • Ok im on the O2 sensor now... Ok i drilled a hole and welded a nut in the pipe right before the cat for the o2 sensor. Hooked up the o2 sensor and im still getting the code... i did some reasearch and found that because its a one wire it should be closer to the motor because it needs to reach a certian temperature for the sensor to work... i feel that since i installed it so far from the headers its not getting hot enough... does anybody know how i can make this one wire o2 sensor work?
  • the look of your setup is obd0 ls intake and possible pr4 ecu?
if its obd1- you need 4 wire i think, if its obd0 1 wire try to grab an older ls exhaust manifold with the flange already on it.
Someone confirm this? "ls exhaust manifold will bolt to the b20?"

Yes ls manifold will work. Im using a p75 manifold with a p75 obd1 ecu. No idea which one will work for obd0...
  • I think the ecu is obd0... the guy at the BAR told me he is going to smog it as a 91 acura integra... if that helps any. but this weekend im going to get back under it and figure this out and ill take lots of pictures if i cant. Thanks!
  • Pr4 manifold is the OBD0 manifold. Its also used in the 92-93 Integra (obd1)
  • So is that stock in a 92-93 teg?
