exhuast smoke?

So a little history for you guys. I baught my car from a very auto savy guy that could have done some pretty bad things to fix this car without knowing what he was doing. He told me the fuel pump was bad so just to be sure I brought a main relay with me when i went to look at it the first time. I put in the relay and it fired right up. The reason why I am saying this is cause I wonder how much gas and starterfluid the PO had dumped down the throttle body trying to get this thing started. Would sitting gas in the intake manifold eat seals? When I changed the oil it had a strong gas smell. wondering if dumping gas down the throttle body might have been associated with that. anyhow i changed the oil with 10w40 and noticed oil consumption was gone. yaaaah! but it still smokes. Ive driven the car maybe 400 miles now thinking that would be enough time for the guide seals to suck up some of that oil. also i did a compression check and got 135-140 all the way around. I am wondering in your guys opinion what you guys think it is. I am leaning towards guide seals but dont want to do it off of my not so experienced opinon.
thank you

  • 135-140 is pretty low. I would perform a leak down test to try and nail down the problem. I would guess your rings are pretty worn with those compression numbers and the smoke you claim. What is the mileage on the engine?

Fuel can wash out bearings very easily as well.

Also a little trick if you have low compression and believe the cause is worn rings is to add a little oil in the cylinders then proceed with your compression test. Numbers should jump considerably, if not then look elsewhere, ie valves headgasket. Make sure you are testing with the throttle wide open.
  • motor has 262k miles. today I put in 1 qt of atf into the oil to see if it could possibly spin my rings around to make sure the gaps are not lined up letting oil get into the combustion chamber. worst case it cleans amazing anyways. I have yet to do a leak down check but as soon as my mechanic i am a apprentice to gets back in town he said we could do this. The more I have looked into it I think you are right about the rings. Its so slugish under load and is burning about a quart every 100 miles. Thank you for your help and I will reply with the results of my findings.
  • while your cranking compression numbers may not be as high as you would think they should be they are however equal which is the most important thing to look for, as for the smoke, seals normally smoke worse after the car has been shit off and sits for as little allowing hot oil to run into the bore. if its smoking more under load or when you goose the gas this is normally from the rings, most likely the oil control rings them selves and not the compression rings, this is why you can sill have a good test reading. more then likely the oil control rings are worn or hanging up.
