Head gasket question

I am changing out my leaking head gasket. It looks like it is just leaking on the outside of the head (no overheating, smoking or dirty oil). I decided to go with a d16y8 gasket because of the material and compression bump. The question I have is: What head bolts should I get? There seems to be two different kinds of bolts (according to a d15b2 service bulletin), ones for leaking gaskets and ones for non-leaking gaskets. I figured I need the ones that are for the leaking gasket, duh. The thing is, since i'm using a y8 head gasket (which is an mls gasket) should I use the new bolts and torque specs?

  • Yes always use new bolts if possable. Stock honda bolts are ment for a one time use. Not saying i have never reused them but if at all possable use new ones. Did your gasket set come with y8 bolts or are you speaking of useing the b2 bolts but new? Use the b2 bolts you not talking "much" deffeance at all in changing to a y8 gasket in thickness. The y8 bolts are differnt the others. One bolt is going to be shorter the the rest. hope this answers your question.

  • I reused my old bolts cuz I forgot to order them but used the Y8 torque spec
  • in a non boosted application i have no problem reusing oem head bolts, they are meant for one time use but they are not a true torque to yield bolt meaning they do not have a necked down section that stretches and then is done for good. most bolts even arp head bolts can loose the ability to hold a torque setting if used to many times or over torqued, the metal it self has to actually act like a spring. you should be fine the most important thing is clean surfaces and torqued properly. over torquing can warp the deck and pull threads.
