Shx ???

I know there are many threads around about suspension, but I am going to ask anyway. I have a set of coilover adjustables and I need to find replacement shocks/struts for my 91 AWD wagon. I am running OEM 15 inch rims for the summer. I only plan on running it an inch or so below stock specs. Can anyone suggest decent replacements. That are not to cheap and not at the high end??

Thanks

    Stock Civic shocks & springs.
  • I recommend Tokico Illuminas with matched springs. They lower about 1.5in. and the stiffness is adjustable so you can tune to what you prefer. I got my set for around $450 shipped (I think) last year and have been pleased with them as daily driven and around the track.

i hear Monroe's are good stock replacement, and i think they come out with a perormance type replacement. those are pretty inexpensive. but i would suggest to Illuminas too. matches springs will lower the wagon just a bit, and as doitdub mentioned, it gives you the ability to adjust stiffness
  • thanks for the suggestions, will the monroes or the tokicos work with coilover's???

I'll try to get a pic up soon, but I bought KYB GR-2's and H&R Sports for my wagon and the front is dumped. The rear however is fine. The parts are for a 90-91 Civic. It rides great, but is too low for my taste and the set up will be changed for some GC's and Konis.

i dont see why they wouldnt be compatible with coilovers.

tociko blues cheap and not outragously priced my buddy has a set they are not overly stiff but definelty not stock. and if your wagon is an 88 u will need LCA's from 89-91 civic.

nm i just saw your wagon is a 91 so you are good to go. what brand of coilovers do u have?
  • duckie8310duckie8310 Senior Wagonist
i dont understand why people always say that you'll need the LCAs from a different year. i mean, companies make year specific products, so you wont have to spend the money to get somrthing else. and those same products are the same price. if you've got an 88, just be sure to get the 88-product. and the 88's are stronger anyway, which is why the used the same style on the ITR. a lot of people swap out the LCAs for the ITR style, but why would you want to go thru all that extra working in swapping in new ones if you arent doing any major racing.

i always tell people...stay year specific!!!

    ...stay year specific!!!

People inclination to want to use later production years items stems from the fact that Honda is known for making improvements as the production cycle progressed. And since most people assume (not unreasonably) that the wagon was like the CRX, changes like 4 wheel disc brakes, more organic dash, "clear" bumper lights/corner lights with no exposed screws, more hp(89+) etc etc have lead people to believe that later is better.

if you had a suspension set up that was for 89-91 they would not fit the 88 so that is why you would have to swap lca's to the 89-91.

if you had a suspension set up that was 89-91, wouldnt you already have the 89-91 LCAs? i mean, why even mention it if you've already got the LCAs. what i was talking about was why people always mention to swap out LCAs. if you're gonna buy something, just stick to your year. but whatever, some people will just call me young and say i dont know anything.

is this really true tho? i've always known that the ITR had the same rear suspention set up as the 88, meaning that Honda knew this was a stronger set up. you say i dont know anything, but thats why im asking. i may be a kid, but i can still learn.

    Relax...I was kidding.

Honda got rid of the 88 setup because the average CRX owner did not like the "twitchy" back end it caused. The larger ITR seems to work better with this setup.

i know you were kidding. i can take jokes, unlike some people on here.
  • I have received conflicting reports on this. I was planning on using a set of Monroe Sensatracs on my wagon. These can be used with the current stock springs. If I swap my stock springs to coilovers does that give me more shock/struts options from manufacturers?? My local tuning shop states that regarless of springs I have to use shocks/struts that are wagon specific??? I figure you guys will know best.

yes those will work just fine on your wagon BUT u can not use your stock wagon springs because your ass end will be almost 2 inches lower in the back than the front. u need to get springs from a 88-91 hatch/CRX/4door or 90-93 integra springs or if u want to lift your wagon a lil u can use 99-00 civic Si springs.

dont listen to local tuner shops. they dont know anything about the wagon. we've been there and done that, so we know whats down.

Read the warranty card first! The Tokico's will NOT warranty the shx if you use coilovers.
  • duckie8310duckie8310 Senior Wagonist
i thought it was lowering in general. well, either way, i didnt bother sending mine in cuz i knew it was going to be lowered.
  • Can someone give me all options for these, I want my wagon to be a little lower but nothing drastic. I planned on using these cheap coilovers I bought on Ebay for the time being. Can I use Monroe sensatracs that are wagon specific with these? My current Stuts are done!
