rt4wd AT slip and shudder

just picked up my first wagon its a 91 rt4wd with an automatic. in drive when i take off the trans seems to slip and then when it shifts to second it shudders and vibrates the whole car.
disengaged the 4wd and that didnt help.
added fluid it was low still didnt help.
took the shift solenoids out and cleaned the screens and put 12volts to them and they clicked but still didnt help my problems.
if i shift it myself up through the gears its fine. downshifts are fine. all other gears shift fine. im at a loss.
