Yes, that thing actually works.
Be careful, when the snow is up over the hood, there's no airflow to the radiator. She gets hot fast.
I've had the same problem, even had to climb through the rear hatch to the front. Apply a light coat of vegetable oil to the seals to prevent this.
Put the wipers up to keep them from freezing to the windshield.
