swap help

so, I've never done a swap before in my life, and decided to TRY and pull my motor out the top of the car, but i didnt take the tranny with it, and now everything is kinda stuck, and it looks like my only option is to undo my tranny mounts, and let the tranny fall while my motor is still hoisted,

anyone got any ideas?
or anyone in washington willing to come help me?

    Wish you were closer...

Do you have the axles out, transmission loose? I think you'll at least need to let the end of the tranny angle down. I've pulled many of these engines, but always WITH the tranny attached.
  • Sounds like the shaft in the trans is catching your pressure plate,
Put the car on stands, put the jack under the trans then unbolt it- its not on the ground and you can wiggle it.
should be able to pull the motor after.

To be honest its so easy just to pull it all at once then pop the trans on the new motor and put it back in. To break them apart and pull just the motor is a pain in the rear "my opinion, not everyones"
  • Put a jack under the trans, remove the front mount. Remove the top of the passenger side mount one bolt on top and one underneath. Unbolt the three bolts to the trans on the rear and lower everything then get it unwedged from the engine and bring the engine back up at an angle. You may have to jack the car up higher though. If you have a good compressor and impact zip off the crank pulley and remove the driver side mount instead of the trans trick.

yeah, we are having issues getting one of the axle nuts off the hub on the driver side so we tried to pull the motor only.
i just cant wait to get my wagon running,
  • You can pull the engine/trans with the axles still in the car. Just need to lift the engine slowly then pop one side out, move over then pop the other out.

Id try to get a few bolts in the trans and pull both out together. So much easier.

I just pulled the other week and it was pretty smoothe to do both engine and tranny together. Mounts come off really easy and then lift it all out.
  • If you break the bottom ball joints loose on the hub, you will be able to move the hub /axle around to give you room to pop them out. This way you can bolt up the motor and trans and pull it out together.
  • when I've pulled engines this way I've always had to remove the exhaust manifold, a/c compressor, engine post mount, alternator and crank pulley to get it to slid out, but I typically pull it out the top this way. Ive done one b series engine removal on an ef through the bottom and it requires the intake and exh manifolds to be removed, engine post mount, alternator, front crossmember, driver side radius rod, half shaft and driver side axle, as well as the thermostat housing outlet, upper cooling hose inlet as well as distributor to be removed.
