My beat up RT4WD

I've been busy with this wagon for the last month or so I figured I finally make a thread.

when I first got her back in Feb.

I was so excited to get my first 4WD, I didnt really check for problems and ended up with a crap bucket. came with bad bushings, wheel bearings, original exhaust rusted through and fell off, head gasket blew a week after I got it, etc. So i put him up on blocks and left it for a few months

body panels were all beat up, paint was faded. So I decided to tend to the rust. I put rust inhibitor on and used up spare paint to prevent more rust. Dont be mad red wagon lovers.

I didnt like the stock blow struts or ride height so I lowered it on front kyb agx and ground control coils, all the way up. and kyb gr2 and eibach sportlines in the rear. the agx came from a killer deal from a guy at wmhm11 who won a raffle and couldnt use them. got the for $60 for both. ground controls came out of a junkyard and the rear gr2/eibach are my first set of springs from over 10 years ago. million mile warranty too of the springs. wheels came off my track car, Ill be getting a new setup for next year

it has been a while since I've updated this thread. I few things have changed since I last posted. I ended up painting the wagon with my friend in my garage. Painting a car in a dirty garage is not a real good idea nor is it fun and will probably never do it again. That being said, I am pleased with the results. 20120814_221057.JPG477.jpg

this is how it looks, about 90% complete. still needs some wet sanding and buffing and some trim pieces re-installed

I took off the my one set of wheels for another set but with 195/50 instead of the 205/50. was not feeling the 195s at all.483.jpg
I decided to convert the wagon to rear wheel drive so I hacked up a set of broken axles. We ended up using a large band saw to cut as much of the axle as possible. 484.jpg485.jpg
the C clip locks this side in place. I left the half shaft bolted in on the other side486.jpg
here's how he looked during the summer

here is a clip of the one piece drive shaft I have, that was previously on the famous Jaker RWD wagon

And I have some big plans for next summerScreenshot_2013-12-26-22-16-49.png

Paint looks Nice! I did the dirty garage paint thing too. I feel your pain. Sure saves you some coin & makes you that much more proud of your ride. Like your color choice!
  • Color does look great! I'm interested in seeing more about your rwd setup.

I sure will get a video of it getting sideways in the wet! For right now, the wagon is raised to stock ride height and back to 4wd for the winter months. As soon as spring comes around I'll convert it back to RWD and lower it again.

thanks! the gray is a custom color that I copied from my raleigh rush hour.

the rwd setup is actually very simple. I just cut up some old, broken axles to make "plugs" for the trans and hubs. I drove the wagon around like that on the stock drive shaft with no issues. However my wagon is severely under powered and still has the open diff in the rear. I'm currently looking for a d series lsd and probably going to do a turbo or supercharged setup in the near future.

here is a cool video of an ee4 from the UK. I really like this wagon, and its funny that the car is almost the same color as mine.

I really like the "van" conversion they did and I am seriously considering it for my wagon as its a company car and I could advertise on the new surface area.
