92 SOHC ZC into 88 RT

I know it will drop right in and bolt up. But I'm worried about wiring/ecu.

Do I need the ecu because the 92 is OBD1 and my wagon is OBD0? Can I use my current harness and ecu? I'm not sure the differences between the OBD0 and OBD1 ZC's. I searched here and d-series.org but kind of came up dry.

Thanks for any help you can give me.

i say to b safe get the harness&ecu if they r cheep.....
then look thru the off the wall swaps bam has done im sure u will see exactly how to combine or repin the obd0 and obd1 harness so it all works

I've never done it but I know lots of folks have and you are going to have to convert from OBD0 to OBD1 and you will definitely need the OBD1 ecu. I feel like there is tons of discussion about this out on the internet. Lots of people converting to OBD1 for (supposively) better tuning software and capabilities.
  • I know a lot of guys do it, but I wanted to be sure it worked in an RT before I haul off and buy it. Thank you for the info woodi, I'll make sure to get the ecu with it..

You can use your current harness and ECU if you :

    1) use the OBD0 injectors

    2) repin the harness for the OBD1 distributor, or use your old distributor

    3) extend or relocate fan switch plug on harness to reach thermostat housing

    4) use the 1-wire oxygen sensor

    If you choose to convert:

You'll need the ECU and the harness (only for plugs and stuff), and an OBD1 jumper (unless you're a wiring guru and hardwire the OBD1 plugs onto your car harness underdash)

    1) switch the OBD1 injector plugs onto your harness and delete the resistor box.

    2) repin the harness for OBD1 distributor

    3) extend or relocate fan switch plug on harness to reach thermostat housing

    4) change the ECU, then run the 4 wires for the OBD1 oxygen sensor from the ECU out to the sensor

I think that's all. OBD0 is cheaper and easier.
  • Thank you very much. This is just a "if I have to" scenario. I'm still waiting for h-motors to get a SOHC ZC in...been about a month now and all they've got in is a 96 SOHC ZC obd2...bleh

My first wagon which was an 88 RT had a obd0 sohc zc in it. One of the reasons I bought the car. The 2 times that I wanted to see what it had against a d16z6 and It was bit faster.(with no vtec as well) Granted all where stock minus intakes which I was not useing. If I could Id go sohc zc again, finding one is hard to do these days. I have a p28 and obd0 to obd1 jumper harness in my closet for when I get ready to do z6 swap. Its up to you but, the obd0 sohc zc's are pretty good motors, and they will pretty much just plug and play with dpfi to mpfi conversion, whereas what Bam said about the obd1 being a little more work. Just used the z6 as a reference since the sohc zc's are often compared to them. Hope I made sense. Keep us updated.
  • yeah im having trouble tracking one down. thought i had one but they made a mistake and it was a 96 sohc zc....obd2...lol fail
