In need of some buying advise (RT4WD noises...)

I came across a 89 4wd 5spd wagon and called the guy to see it. He said it was "super clean"...found out it wasn’t.
Two main things I noticed.

Clunking noise, it happened any time I let off the clutch, laid down beside the car and saw that there was ALOT of play in the mount...I assume that's where the sound is coming from...any other idea's? (and yes I've done searches on this..)

Shuttering, it happened at 10mph+ from the rear end...the car was pretty much slammed so again that could be the reason, but I'm really not sure...the last thing I want to do is raise it back up only to find that isn’t the issue.

Any help would be greatly appreciated, thanks peeps!!

  • Could be the mounts causting clunk noise or a loose control arm. The vibration might be the rear LCA bushings. Good Luck.

Vibration in the rear is most likely U joints.

Or a big bitch shakin' dat ass.
  • Thanks haydz and freddy.

So shuttering/vibration (feels like hitting a very light version of the warning bumps on the highway)
is probably coming from the U-joints.

And Clunking is most likely coming from the differential mount?

If there is anything else i need to check on a RT4wd manual please let me know...

    thanks again peeps!
  • i know a kid that had the same problems, he said it was the rubber bushings on the rear differential

Had the same clunking noise too and found out the front engine mount was completely destroyed. About $25 for a new one. Or do what I did, I bought a new mount and filled it with urethane. It shifts SO NICE. The mount is small enough where if you fill it you still get some flex. Just don't fill the large pulley-side mount like I did, unless you like your wagon's panels to vibrate like you're taking off in a WW1 airplane!
