V Dub van style basket roof rack

Made this up for my rt4wd a couple weeks ago still need the expanded metal the floor and wire the lights. It works pretty well have hauled on it so far: 300ft of pvc (In 20 ft sticks), a filing cabinet, lumber, and a small sofa. cost me $15 for the metal and lots of welding with my little lincoln wire welder.

    lol ^^
    looks great man.
  • Finally got the lights wired the other day used my rear defrost button and relay the rear defrost was un hooked by the po probably because the back glass is tinted so I just came off those wires to the offroad lights.

Is that a timed relay? So your lights would automatically go off after 15minutes?

It looks great on the car. Now I have another thing to add to the bucket list for the wagon. Did you do the tube bending?
  • Yea I just used a conduit bender. I have a regular tubing bender but it kinks light weight pipe bad. The conduit bender is easy to use. If you can get thin wall steel tubing it would be better. the conduit is galvanized and lets off noxious dunes when you weld it. I used it because it was cheap. Supposedly battery acid will take the galvanized off the pipe but I didn't try it.
  • Did you use EMT or RMC pipe?
Welding galvanized has been linked to alzheimer's and other wonderful brain problems.

I was thinking about doing something like this for a bull bar, use some 1 1/4" RMC...but i'd need a chicago style bender to make those funky bends....

Nice work though man, this is a really great post, hopefully more guys will take this approach.
  • I used emt and always had fan at my back. Not recommending it but its cheap and light. $15 and 20lbs
  • does anybody know if a eg coupe yakima rack will fit on my wagon? If not what mods have to be done?
  • Ross: I don't know if the defrost is timed or not. Haven't had them on for very long yet.
  • For homemade, its looks amazing! great work, looks very well made. You could prob sell them on here if they arent a pain to make...I know i'd buy one

civic91wagon If it came from a Honda. You can adjust a Yakima rack to fit just about any other body. I have one that has been on my 96 accord/91prelude/2010civic/89 accord. I finally retired it for a new one. your only problem could be having a factory rack on your wagon. And they make clips to fit them as well.
  • I probably could. I just never have been able to do things very many more times than once. I like the challenge of building things with little to no money even if I have it. Most of my bikes are true rat rods in the sense that they are built from whatever I have laying in the bone pile.
