88/91 RT engine swap

My 88 RT engine has a coolant leak (cracked head or bad gasket or sumpin') and I want to swap the engine out of my 91 into it cuz it ran stronger anyway, plus it has a block heater which is nice when it gets 20 and 30 below around here. Both d16's with 6 speed manual. I want to keep the 88 trans tho - the 91 doesn't go into reverse very smoothly. I know the clutch, which I want to replace, is specific to the 88 and I am assuming the 88 trans will bolt to the 91 block but I will have to keep the flywheel from the 88 with the trans too. Am I right here? Any other issues to know about? I searched and got a lot of responses but couldn't find these answers. TIA, much appreciated.

There's only three to choose from. Just as long as you get the RT4WD T/O Bearing (22810-PH8-008) and the right spline count and the right outer diametre then you should be sweet.

Sounds like you have it figured out. Use the '88 engine harness as well.
  • Didn't even think about the engine harness, but that reminds me I was also wondering if I should swap out the ECU?

    Thanks guys!

Might as well. You cal always check the codes on them to see if they match...
