Hey ya'll from Louisiana
Well i guess it's time for a build thread since i just got the car friday. It's an 88, the seats have been reconditioned. It's got a SOHC ZC, under seat tray and working 5sp + SL.
What's missing? A little paint on the drivers side fender, the entire propshaft, and working ac.
here she is next to my s2k
Ignore all the freakin oil on the ground. My roommate failed at changing the 2 whole quarts of oil in his 74 beetle.
had about 253k+ on the clock
first tank was 29.9 mpg!
popped the spark plugs out yesterday and they were covered in oil and the tips looked terrible. So i put in new plugs and changed all the gaskets on the valve cover. felt like it was running a little better.
went and changed the black sludge out of the pan today and threw one of my many oem s2k filters on and some fresh oil. Then adjusted all my clearances that were all way off.
purrs like a kitten now.
and a bonus pic with some of my buddies the other night.
first on the list, buy a prop shaft which should be taken care of tomorrow. Then fixing asap. I dunno if you guys know but its hot as #$&^@& in louisiana. Trust me i was in palm desert CA last month where it was 115 and it felt lovely compared to even 90* here in the humidity
Hope you guys enjoy and i hope i can continue with some nice updates! If you want some pics of anything in particular just let me know.

back to 88 bumper lights since one of my clears was busted
put a new fan switch into the block and it broke off in there but it was so not even tight that it came out with my hand.
ive goofed around with some wheel options and bought a set of teg LS meshes im probably going to refinish with a black powercoat. im going to test fit every one of my friends wheels till i find what i really want. hoping a 15x8 will fit with a 205 on it under there but i may have to settle for a 7.5
here's the best looking meshie
wheel from my buddys crx
another buddy with crx(this one actually has 3 of em) and sedan
got er up on the lift to change out my rear diff fluid and trans fluid and we found out why my a/c's compressor clutch wasnt kicking on.....
The previous owner told me it worked well and just stopped one day. I spent a few hours the weekend i got it and it came down to the compressor clutch.....which wasnt there. I guess that one day it just fell off on him! So we popped one on there and as long as its not 106+ outside here it works quite well.
Heres a couple more pics from that night.
cleaning up the iacv so it wont bounce from 2k to 1k occasionally at redlights.
still missing a prop shaft but i have half of it now!
since then ive gotten the window tinted
and used about half a can of mother back to black on the bumpers and molding. It's getting much better
found this a few weeks ago
which i pulled a window regulator and a few random trim pieces as well as some very nice(not at the time, they were straight mud then) floor mats out of
So i figured id try to grease my window regulator first and in taking off the door panel I discovered some interesting smells and also a disintegrated old original speaker. dunno how it was still playing music. so i swapped them when my original s2000 speakers
I replaced the one wrong color knob and missing side molding thanks to iboyma
And since it actually rained here for the first time all summer and my front wipers did pretty much nothing and my rear one just fell off when i turned it on, i decided to replace those too.
thank goodness the car came with this huh?

Edit: I've also got an odd metallic rattle in 1st-3rd seems dependent upon being wide open on the throttle and not really on rpm or anything else. I'm betting its a heatshield or something but i wouldnt mind some other ideas
Got in a little package from turbo_teg(thanks buddy!)
rear half of the drive shaft(cat was not included, she's my own.
viscous coupler and a little hardware
and a new knob to replace my super cracked up one
thanks to some help from you HCW folks. I just hope i can return the help one day
It turns right over then dies. I do not have a check engine light or any of the other dash lights that normally come on before you crank it. I also could not hear the fuel pump priming up.
I'm thinking its the ignition switch. I checked over every fuse and had one blown but i cant remember what it was. Under dash panel bottom left and maybe one to the right? 10amp. replaced it and same thing. I ran out of ideas and gave up. checked advance for a pump and they were almost 200 so i figured id just order a walboro tomorrow if that's what it is.
Thoughts? Ideas? something to just get me off school campus so they dont boot it. then i can fix it.
but to me sounds like the ignition wiring harness.
go back to get the wiring harness off the back of the ignition switch for that blue wagon.
it unscrews with two screws.
If it runs and does not crank that would be main relay.
I've had that problem and it was the switch harness.
lets start with the valve cover.
stripping
cleaning/masking
vht wrinkle painting
grinding off letters
done
NEXT
coolant switch
OUCH turns out coolant is hot despite the name
newbie(#4 on switches)
Fans now come on when it gets warm DONE.
NEXT
headliner?
out
stripped
glued
IN AND DONE
hopefully ill get a better pic tomorrow with the handles and light in it was too dark to see.
GTFO old condenser!
With my buddies old vw cabbi
new condenser and drier too
new one in and new orings!
Holding a vacuum very well
Add oil and refrigerant and she cools off real nice like!
BOOM
solution for the ragged fender? let my friends sticker bomb the heck out of it.
new fuel filter and pcv
And for the s2000
installed :O
also put on a new blower motor and got an extra shifter extender
I still have a set of integra LS Meshies that need refinishing but all the powdercoaters here want 80 a wheel which is just too much for those imo. But i cant bring myself to rattle can em either. Quite a dilemma. I'm probably just going to buy some decent tires for the steelies for now to get me through the winter.
Up next is some more driveshaft parts from bam. hopefully with working awd before i make the trip to see the family for christmas and then a little ski vacay with friends in colorado. Cars will be the wagon, autox prepped imprezza rs25 and a wrx wagon with a full 2.0jdm swap and sti 6 speed that makes almost 400 to the wheels and breaks something every autox. Its gonna take all three cars to get all three cars there and back i think lol.
well the headliner is all in with handles cleaned up and visors mounted with a new bracket for the wink mirror. I need to make the arms that come off the bracket though because the one that came with it are too short after bending. I have some aluminum to shape and bend maybe tonight or later this week.
whatcha think?
up next is painting that window trim back to black. I thought i was going to do it this weekend but i just needed a break from work to rest.
Ran the wagon for kicks and wasnt the slowest thing out there! Started the night off with an 18 flat
and ended with a 16.8 after roasting my old as dirt all seasons on 15psi for pass #4. Managed to cut a 2.3 60ft without beating on it too bad. Definitely surprised a lot of folks, myself included. I had a lot more fun doing it than running high 13s in the s2k though!
drove about an hour and a half. goofed off on the way there, made a couple passes and came all the way home for 10 gallons worth of 30.1 mpg
traded it in the garage for the s2k on sunday for some autox and pulled off 7th locally. not a bad way to end the season!
got quite a bit of work planned for over the winter. Ill keep you guys posted. She'll be rt4wd again by 2012 or bust!
Thanks to HCW's very own bam-bam and turbo teg i got enough driveshaft parts to bolt mine back together. this little rt has functioning RT4WD now!
thanks again so much you two. I dunno how i could have done it without ya. parts are scarce over here!
Ive also made those wink brackets and.....kinda painted my window trim and wiper arms. they are at least mostly black again, plenty of runs and some bubble but at least i know its not gonna rust. Still havent figured out how to do the now silver trim under the rear glass. its got some very thick paint on it still that's flaking off but not enough to peel it all. looks like chome where its missing though. does that piece pop out? I'm not sure how to go about it really.
Remove end caps, and slide it out to one side until you expose one or two of the plastic guys that hold it on there.
After the trim piece slides out of the channels on the plastic guy on one side, slide it out the opposite way to get the other side out of it's plastic guy.
The ends of the trim piece slant up, and if you were to try to slide the whole trim piece out in one direction you could bend it or F it up or both.
When you reinstall, lube up the trim piece channels, and use a small flat head screw driver to help get the end of the trim to line up with the plastic guys. It helps to have someone apply pressure while you line everything up. Make sure you slide the trim back on starting with the center three or four plastic guys, because the ends are the hard part.
WD-40 is your friend for this, because I know you have all kinds of crap up in the channels of the trim piece. If you have rust around this area it will be a real pain to remove.
I had to do this a few days ago to weld in some rust holes.
Nice build btw.
ive got some more work to do. unfortunately the pass side corner light was cracked yet again. just cant win. but ive got a good fender when it comes time for paint
also got my windshield replaced and they used the old trim and its a good quarter inch off the frame. really annoying. They pretty much told me too bad. bah
well i glued my one broken vent fin back on so it looks great. no pics unfortunately.
and yesterday i plastidipped my alligator skin looking mudflaps and then painted the letters gold. it looks incredible in person.
Looks like you've really caught the bug, though!
and beyond caught, past addiciton, i love this car more every day. I'm sure the s2000 is pretty pissed about it, but she'll be ok once autox season starts back up.
bought some corner lights from Gasoline Fumes today so those can finally be not cracked up.
Also bought some dunlop snow tires. ha ha the tire rack guy....."ok ill send these to our louisiana warehouse for.....uhhh you know these are snowtires right?"
gonna get the teg LS Meshies finished and see how well the snowtires do for rallycross next year.
the mudflaps however look way too new......so i guess im plastidipping the trim pieces next since they look like complete crap in comparison.
up next? maybe suspension/bushings, she's getting awfully creaky. I really need a replacment for the diff bushing. mine is cracked all the way through.
