Tire Pressure

Just curious, what pressure do you guys usually maintain in your tires? I've had people recommend anything from 28 to 40 LB, but have been using 32 lately.

    Man it depends on alot...
but as for me and my Rt4wd
    off roading  25psi 8)
    on the road  29psi

but this is all a comfort thing ... do u like feeling every crack n the road ... go with 35psi...
hey ive seen people run more...
im not the guy that worries about gas mileage or tire wear ...
pricing some 205/70/15 all terrains right now....

I noticed when I went to 32 from 28 that my mpg went up a little and that the handling was a lot crisper. But the ride quality was also a lot harsher. I then tried 35 and thought it was way too harsh. 32 seemed like a good compromise.

You're over thinking. And I don't believe your MPG went up with lower pressure. (4 psi at that)

    Go with manufacturers recommendation.

I'm at 32 in the front and 36 in the rear. I've always ran my cars that way though.

You are funny man. Anyhow I messed up and went to the 44 max on the tire and now I realize that is not the correct thing to do. I'll drop the pressure back to what it says on the door. 33 or something.
  • In the spirit of the necrothread, I think Charb read what cogito said backwards, as there would be a mpg gain raising the pressure to 32 from 28. Whether it's all that measurable or not, that's another matter. But like Charb said, I go with the manufacturer's recommended spec. The sticker on the door jamb is good for the tires they were putting on things at the time.

Some tire tech has changed a good deal, so there are tires out there that are designed to have a higher PSI, honda wasn't predicting that in the 80s/90s with the stickers on the door so I definitely go by what the manufacturer of the tire states. If like 3rd4ce said, mpg/tire replacement isn't a huge concern for you, then rock it at what you think is comfortable.

32 all corners summer. 29 all corners winter.
  • I run nearer to the sidewall max. I like quick turn in and road feel. So to offset the tall sidewalls I up the pressures. These BFGs I am on have a max of 65psi! I am running them at 40psi and that is a happy spot for them.
