F$#@&IN Speedo Cable

Got pretty much everything disconnected form my engine last night to pull it out except the axles. Last thing to do before i moved to pulling the axles out was to yank out the speedometer cable. I popped the clip loose and gave it a tug and nothing happened... Then stupid me gave a good tug on the cable itself and pulled the jacket away from the end that inserts in the transmission. I then sweared and pulled and sweared some more trying to cram my hands and pliers down into that little hole to yank it out with no luck. I soaked it in pb blaster last night and again this morning in hopes that'll free it up. Anyone have this problem before? I removed it a year ago when I swapped the engine in and it popped right out. Now this time it's stuck in there bad. Is there a trick I'm forgetting or did a year of wny winter with lots and lots of salt just take it's toll on me and pb blaster and pulling are all I got to try.

Should just come right out. Me and Stampern did his speedo cable awhile ago and it just pulls out. One question is, and excuse me if this sounds dumb/insulting, are you pulling the cable from inside the car or the engine bay? If you're pulling it from the engine bay it won't come out as the clip for the speedometer is too big to fit through the firewall. If you're pulling it through the inside than just wiggle it a little bit while pulling it through. Eventually it'll give in. Hope this helps

I was trying to get it out of the transmission... it was rusted in there good. I let it soak in PB Blaster for a day then worked on twisting it back and forth with pliers from under the car. Then came back top side and was able to pull it out. I thought that was how it worked. The salt around here just got the best of me. She's out now...

I am to this point now and there's no info in the chilton on this. Do you just remove the metal clip and pull the cable from the transmission?

Ive found a good technique invloves soaking the edge in PB for 20 mins then some skinny needle nose as close to the base as possible and some slow sturdy rotations while pulling lightly.same technique for stuck fuel lines and radiator hoses. take your time and youll save yourself the hassle of having to buy a new one :)
  • @genx, yeah just needle nose the clip off and the cable pulls right out. kind of a pain but its not too bad.

Yes, but if there is no pinched alloy cover on the end of the cable and is just the cable and casing itself you need to check inside the VSS and see if the cover is inside or someone just said screw it. You need to extract it and crimp it again or buy a new one or it will fall out.

Thks It came right out after the clip came off. any suggestions for instillation? i fear some water may have gotten in as I was cleaning off the gunk. Maybe flush some fluid trough the spedo hole or apply grease?

I'm thinking I need a new speedo cable. When the car is cold I get a squeeking sound that corresponds with the wheels rotation. I may try first removing the tranny end and lubing the inner cable. Anyone else have issues and fixes with noisy speedo cables?

Are you sure it's the cable?
Could also be the dizzy rotor.

I took the tranny end out and removed the inner cable. I cleaned it and relubed with white lithium grease. Fixed for now. I'll see how it holds up.

The only problem I had is trying to get the clip back on. No way to reach it with the supercharger in the way. Right now it's just in and zip tied in place. Don't like it but I think it will be fine that way.
