Poor unadorned center caps! Whatever can I do about that?
Some time ago I found a guy selling replacement decals for center caps on ebay. It looked like he had put some effort into getting them just the right size. I made a mental note purchase from him when the time came.
These are meant for smaller (and I think later model) center caps but I thought they might do for my mini fat fives. They are offered in many colors but I decided to get as close as possible to stock with flat black. Sure the original was paint but vinyl will do for my 'restored' wheels
The tricky part is centering them.
I toyed with the idea of leaving the rings around the H...
... But decided to hew as closely to stock as I might.
And back on the wagon!
As a side note, the rattle can paint on my wheels and particularly on my center caps has suffered from being marked repeatedly by neighborhood feral cats. It seems the ammonia and whatnot they spray is detrimental to non-clearcoated paint. So while I know that they could use a fresh paint job, I went ahead and applied the decals for the time being. I'll need new ones when I figure out how to repaint them in a more lasting finish.
wow you bought decals from a guy in Mississauga. I'll be up there in a couple of months.
My wife is there and we are supposed to go for one of her cousins wedding.
Yes, he also does full vinyl wraps for his wheels in the frozen months.
SEM makes a clear coat that is really good.
I used it on my wifes accord wheels I painted years ago. Could not tell if was not factory.
I'll do the same with the wheels bam picked up for me a while ago once I start prepping them.
This particular rustoleum paint clearly stated not to use clear coat. I tested one piece and the bright 'aluminium' paint turned a dull gray. Next time around, I'll have to choose a paint & clear coat system.
If/when you need new ones, you lmk. I could make u a negative to use as a stencil, then paint, remove, them clearcoat. All would be painted, with no vinyl decal... just an option if you wanted the stock, all paint look.
Did you ever have on of those days where what you thought was going to happen didn't happen and what you've been afraid could happen DID happen?
Let's just say, I'd rather have been pulled up in that liquor store parking lot for another reason.
The girl gets a lift home.
And speaking of lifts, this is what the rental company found for me to drive.
And this after the very first repair. bam flattened the hood and bent out the leading corner of the left fender.
And so begins the road to the next thing. As you will know, one dent or scratch and you've exceeded what the insurance company wants to pay for repair. So Dory has been "totaled". Going forward will involve a salvage title OR a whole different wagon with another VIN. So if you know where I might get a structurally sound shell (that need not run) please let me know.
