What side head gasket goes where?!?!

well went to throw on the head gasket tonight and realized i don't know which way it goes... it is the one that supersedes hondas original gasket for the d16a6. Honda part # 12251-p01-004 multi layer metal gasket.

this is how i think it should go on

all of the forming on the duel color side is facing outwards..

the other side, all the forming is facing the duel color side.

i just don't know any help is appreciated!!

  • You had it right the first time, the metal rings left on the one side of the gasket match the deck on your block so it seats better. Just grab some Indian Shellack and your ready! =D

    If it's an OEM Honda gasket the top layer will have an UP cut out of it to tell you what side is up.

    you will also notice if u lay it on the deck of the block that there is a little "tang" in one of the oil drain holes on the intake side.

    if its upside down the tang will hang over the drain hole and if its right side up it will fit perfectly and there will be no overhang.


    ugh i cant find a good pic, the head studs are blocking the tang im talking about...


    edit; even easier is check where the water pump is, and make sure that the head gasket lines up with where the water pump is...

    thanks guys, i couldn't find the up mark that you were talking about mr g. but there were numbers, witch the honda dealership told me always face up.

    danz, i forgot to look before i bolted er down, maybe some one else will be as smart as me and not know how it goes and that lil bit of info will help them out!
