Speedometer problem and throwing code 17

I have a 91 civic wagon FWD. My speedometer is working when im stepping on the gas but when I let go, speedo will go back to zero and comes back up when I step on it again. I have error code 17 which is the VSS. I checked the back of the cluster and the speedo cable is all the way plugged. Does anyone have had the same problem and what can I do to fix it? I will appreciate any info I can get from anyone.

  • VSS is in the trans I believe. Sounds like that is only engaging under force? Not really sure how that works.

I called Honda dealer and see if they sell a VSS for the wagon, they said wagons don't have VSS on the trans and it's only cable operated. It might be inside the cluster but I dont know how am I going to replace it.

Yes they do have a VSS...

The VSS is what you speedo cable actually goes into on the Transmission.. It is a Manual VSS (non-electronic)....

Looks like this and the little table that holds it in:

Any 88-91 D-Series Trans will work

I would try the VSS first, then the cluster...

before anything i would just make sure that the cable is FULLY inserted into the tranny.

How do u pull that vss? I took the the 10mm bolt off and the retaining bracket that holds it, wiggled a bit and it wont go..

you have to pry it out.the o-ring is prob making it a little tough to get out.

Or there's corrosion that has "welded" the speedometer cable drive gear assembly into the transmission case. That is often the case. Even with the tranny out of the car, they can be almost impossible to remove at times. I think Danz is right. The cable is probably not fully seated, and when you step on the gas, the cable is pushed into the drive gear. When you let off the gas, the motor rolls forward on the motor mounts, and pulls just hard enough on the cable to slip it out of the drive gear.

Oh, and the VSS itself is attached to the back of the speedometer where the cable inserts and is actually called the speed pulser.
