all 88-95 SOHC's should be set to 16 deg on the crank. which is the middle mark on 88-95 crank pulleys. thats obd0 and obd1, D15's and D16's

96-00's go to 12 degrees, which is the middle mark as well on their crank pulleys. that would be OBD2 cars, Y7s, Y8s, etc

would it be odd if my d16y7 didnt have the three notches you are talking about i looked the balancer over like 4 times and only thin i found was a white mark ( in the grooves of the balancer where the alt belt goes ). could i use the balancer from my d15b2 on the d16? thanks

what ECU are you using? are you running the car OBD2?

if you are using your stock ECU, or an OBD0 or OBD1 ECU, set your timing to 16 degrees.

if you dont have the marks on your crank pulley, i would go ahead and buy a digital timing light so you can set it to 16 degrees on the light itself, and use the TDC mark on the crank pulley.

if u NEED to use a different crank pulley, use one off of a D16. it is a harmonic dampener, where the D15 pulley is solid.

you want the dampener to help with the terrible RS ratio of the D16+

Is the distributor nicely centered in the slots or is it well ahead or behind the center? Have the vales been adjusted recently?

Ok so my friend who bought my 1990 Honda civic wagon with the stock 1.5, says he was going down the highway then all the sudden, power down and backfiring. I thought, ok timing belt, no biggie. Well I went to go help him out and we found a couple other problems, water pump has some serious corrosion all around it and leaks. Pulled the spark plugs and cyl. 4 and 3 were soaked in oil. So we started to get real worried about the oil in the spark plugs, and through research we learned about the rocker arm assembly o-rings. It made no sense that there was oil on the plugs because i just put on a valve cover gasket set right before I sold it to him. So we pulled the rocker arm assembly, and those babies were flat as pancakes. So we got those on order... but, I totally forgot what the hell I was doing and took off the timing belt before checking the marks on TDC. So I am just concerned because I accidentally rotated the cam pulley. I have replaced the timing belt before when it shredded, popped another one on and it ran great. Im thinking maybe I didn't tighten it good enough, or maybe i should have installed a new tensioner, and It got loose and jumped a couple teeth. Now that I took the belt of and moved the cam, how do I get this back together. Once the o-rings go on and I put the rocker arm assembly back on and torque it, do I need to just get TDC on #1 then spin the cam so that the marks all line up? With the timing belt off is it ok to turn the cam?

Not to mention install a new waterpump, and tensioner....

if you tighten anyting in there, make sure its by tq specs. you definitely need the honda manual. the books are really cheap and well worth the investment.
  • Yup, just go to TDC on the block then line up your cam(with the T-belt off).Once you put the belt back one rotate it a full cycle(by hand/wrench) to make sure it lines back up. Like 949 said, be sure to TQ it all down. Don't guess. Learned the hard way about that.

OK sweet, that makes its simple enough, I just wanted to be sure before i mess anything else up. yeah I got the manual, its kinda falling apart though. I need to invest in a torque wrench, which one is a good one?
