Loose/Imprecise gear lever

Sorry if there's a thread somewhere about it, but could not find it.
Is there a DYI to solve the loose movements from the gear lever? The gearbox works fine but once in gear, the lever has a lot of side-to-side movent (just like when it's in neutral).
I'm planning to go for it this weekend, maybe replacing some bushings down the lever assembly could do the trick.

first i would make sure that your linkage is still all OEM

for example, there is a spring pin that is used to hold the linkage onto the gear selector rod in the tranny.

many people dont reinstall it because it can be difficult to remove, so they use a bolt/nut. that will give you side to side play for sure.

make sure all the u joints in the linkage assembly are tight.

and make sure the bushings in the shifter itself (at the bottom under the car above the exhaust) have no play. they wear out quite often as well.

NAPA sells a bushing kit for the shifter itself but not the rest of the linkage.

oh and last but not least make sure the bushings at the very back of the linkage is still in good shape. it would sit at the very rearward most part of the linkage.

and i should mention these are for 2wd cars only. the cable linkage system i have no experience with... sorry

Is this a RT4WD car or a 2wd car? This info will help a lot since the shifters and cables/linkages are completely different.

If its a rod shifted Honda the Energy kit includes 2 bushings that make a world of difference

    It's a 4WD car...

Well since I was recently having a very very similar problem with my 4wd wagon maybe I can help. Check to make sure that the bolts that hold down the shifter cable bracket in the engine bay are all tight and actually there; the bracket is bolted right to the top of the rear engine mount. Also check to make sure that the shifter cables are tightened to the bracket (you will see what I am talking about when you are in there; it is hard to explain with just words).

Then if that fails you could try is do a simple rebuild of the shifter with new washers and/or doubling up some. This thread here should give you a idea on a rebuild for the shifter assembly, and also has some other good info also:

Hope some of this helps. If you need pictures of what I am talking about let me know and I will see what I can do.
