No power, engine dies

Wagonist
hey guys, i've got a tricky little problem here. my mom was driving the wagon today to run a few errands. the car has been running fine recently, but after a few stops and on her way home, the car bogged down, as she put it, it was running like a car does when you shift into too high of a gear (think going from first to fifth on a std. tranny, not the auto in the wagon), she gave it a little gas, and the engine completely died.
she tried to get it to restart, but it just wouldnt turn, and she had to have it towed home. i've had this happen to me once before, but it started back up, and has been running fine since, its even made several 200 mile trips (one way) back and forth from school and home over some mountains without any issues
i'm kind of at a loss to what could be wrong with it, its got a brand new battery, alternator, plugs and wires, among other random seals and gaskets, and the only think i know for a fact that it needs is new seals around the spark plugs (oil is in with the plugs). the problem is that the car is now at home, and i'm back at school, so time is kind of lacking to go out and mess around with it.
anyone have a clue on what i should look at? i've been thinking that with everything going on with it, and not knowing the service records of the car, that it may be time for a tear down and rebuild, so on a side note, anyone have any suggestions for a rebuild kit? factory specs or not, i'd prefer to just get everything i need at once. i've found a few on google searching but i dont know what would be worth the cash
