Goelette;

Hi to all,

My name is Tom Veldman, and I'm from the Netherlands. i'm new here on this forum, so that's why I will introduce myself now... :)

I just got my Civic Shuttle RT4WD last week, and I was very surprised to find a forum for these kind of cars! I'm used to all kinds of Honda-fora, like for CRX or Accord, but I'm very glad to have found you! can always come in usefull!

I've had different kinds of cars before, but ever since I got my first Honda, I caught some kind of virus. There simply is no better car than a Honda :) At the moment I own 6 honda's, and two 4x4 oldtimer trucks. one of the honda's, a civic, is sold to my sister in law as of next month. The others, I will introduce now:

My first Honda was a 1984 CRX 1.5i. but I only had that one very short, because of transmissionproblems. Later on, I would realize that this was only a very small problem, but the car was already gone, so I had to find another one.
then I got a 1988 CRX 1.6i. I still own that one. It is fully restored, new paint, lots of new bodywork, etc etc. It is this car, which I also used last summer to get married:

When I was working on this car, during more than a year, I got another 1985 CRX 1.5i. My wife drives this car daily now. When she had an accident, I had to replace the complete front. Sadly, all parts I had were black, the car was white. I didn't want to paint the entire car, so i found another solution...:

My wife still drives this car at the moment. But this CRX will be replaced by the Shuttle! (first baby on the way.... need more space!!)

I found another CRX for a bargain price, an 1986 1.6i. I have that one in my garage, and will restore it in the future. Just for fun :)

For a daily drive, I have a 1991 Accord Aerodeck (wagon, in the USA). A JDM H22A-engine, 203 HP is swapped into it. Here are some pics:

Before I had Honda's, I was really into 4WD's. that's why I still have these two cars:
a 1954 Renault Goelette 4x4:

and a 1965 Unimog 4x4
unimog.jpg

But ofcourse, it would be ideal to have a 4x4 Honda!

Then finaly, I discovered that the Shuttle was also available in rt4wd. I guess it's not comparable to the trucks above, but's it's a four wheel drive nonetheless! The minute I found that out, I was looking for one. And found one! Now I only have to do some minor repairs on the exhaust. Maybe I have to do some work on the clutch, but that's not absolutely neccesary yet. And I have some work on the bodywork. There are some holes in the fenders :) but all that will be OK, hopefully soon!

The shutlle is equipped with a D16A6 engine, Mpfi. Guess this is standard in europe? But I still have to learn a lot about that kind of stuff...

So, I hope I didn't bore you with all the other cars, but now at least you know what a nut I am... :) Just crazy for Honda and 4x4!
I hope to learn a lot about the RT4wd Shuttle, especially since the rt4wd is very rare here in the Netherlands.... so difficult to get info or parts here, I guess... that's what the internet is for!

greetzzzzz

  • That Accord Wagon is nice. I have the same problem you do with finding parts here in Germany. At least I can still get parts from the States without having to pay those crazy international shipping prices :D

    Welcome to the Forum!!!
  • international shipping prices are ridiculous from the USA to Europe. From Europe to the States it costs next to nothing....

So if I need anything from the States in the future, I'll send it to you first :D ;)

Ya, that is a sweet little Honda you got yourself !

I'm happy to see that Honda wagons are being represented in my "adopted" country.

Ah, the "sacht g" of Limburg... LOL

I lived in "Het Land van Maas en Waal" (the land between the Meuse and the Rhine rivers) in the early eighties. I was an exchange student and lived with a gast-familie (host family) for a year. Strangely enough the Dutch culture stuck real good and I still "begrijp" (understand) the language okay. Anyhow, my "adviseur" (counsellor) was from Maastricht and spoke with the distinctive accent of the region.

Once a year my city (Winnipeg, Canada) hosts an event called Folklorama (www.folklorama.ca/folklorama.php) which last 2 weeks. It consists of 40-plus cultural pavilions and the Dutch pavilion is one of my favourites. I still astound the pavilion volunteers with my command of Dutch and my love for Gouda and Grolsch !!

Again, welkom to the club and I look forward to hearing about your progress with the Shuttle.
  • Yeah I am always up for helping a wagon owner just like anybody else on this site would. Just let me know what you need.

lalunette, how many languages do you speak??
  • lalunette, how many languages do you speak??

    In learning order:

    French - speak/write fluently
    English - speak/write fluently
    Dutch - speak/write so/so
    German - speak so/so
    Spanish - speak so/so
    Mandarin - still learning

    Cheers !!
  • Incredible :)
It's nice to meet foreigneirs that speak your language... You Americans are lucky that way, almost everyone can speak your language. But dutch, that's another story.

Ya, learning Dutch is not something one does on a whim... it's actually a difficult language. For example, try pronouncing this: achtentachtig prachtige grachten.

Here,s a hint, pretend to spit and that is usually how you pronounce the "ch" and the "g", which is quite different than English.

BTW, I don't consider myself a foreigner, I'm more of a wanna-be "kaaskop" (cheese head). There is a store called the Dutch Meat Market (www.dutchmeatmarket.com) near my house that carries a wide variety of Dutch foods so I can get my fix of speculaas, hopjes, vlokken and zuit riotten whenever I want. I also take my Gouda seriously!

lets see, i speak two languages fluantly.. English and Hungarian (i have yet to meet any non-hungarians who can speak this :D i know a little German... just enough to survive... also trying out my Schweizer-Deutsch, quite possibly my favorite form of the German language.
  • lets see, i speak two languages fluantly.. English and Hungarian... i know a little German... also trying out my Schweizer-Deutsch

Hungarian? I seriously don't know any Hungarian... what does it sound like?

And how about this "Schweizer-Deutsch" thing... is it spoken in Switzerland?

    Cheers !!
  • wagodizzlewagodizzle Council Member and EDM expert
Hungarian doesnt sound like any other language out there :D closest thing to it that i have been is Finnish...

Schweizer-deutsch is the Swiss dialect of German. its pretty crazy

    Finnish? Like in "Haaka Palle"??

Learnt that one reading SM Stirling's trilogy Dies the Fire. Pretty fun read but, in my humble opinion, not as good as the Island in the Sea of Time trilogy

We were at a race track, and I was with the organisation. Thats why I had a trailer, to carry all kinds of stuff with me. Some people (guests) were driving on the track SOOO slow, that I wanted to show them how fast I could go round with the trailer. And indeed, I was a lot faster :D
  • Welcome, Welkom, Vilkommen !!
Awesome collection Man ! I really have some wood for that Unimog of yours :) You Euros have access to so many nice vehicles that never even get thru our borders ( Thanks to Congress and the Big 3 ) ! I am so jealous!!
What i wouldn't give for access to a Honda Beat, a few more Honda Gyros, and a wide variety of tiny cars that can never seem to pass our ALL IMPORTANT crash tests. Thank you NHTSA, you bastards!
Like a Honda Fit, or even an Accord for that matter, is gonna hold up all that well when it gets tatered head-on by a full size DODGE or a GMC Suburban. I drive small cars cuz i like the size and i love the fuel economy. If i wanted safety as my only concern I'd be driving a Sherman tank.
So keep us updated on your bodywork and upgrades to the latest member of your collection.
And always remember we always preach love and understanding for all peoples and cultures here............except the Dutch ;) and Carnies! anybody else smell cabbage??

    Hey... them's fightin' words !!!

Don't forget ABBEY, I know where you live!! LOL

And finally, the thing about not having access to Euro cars has nothing to do with distance (look at all the cars from Japan on our roads). It has to do with restrictions the US and CDN governments (thx to pressure & large donations from the BIG 3) have put into place to "protect" the North-American car industry.

There are tons of Euro cars I would love to buy & drive that will NEVER make it over the "pond". Thank you Mr. Dodge, Mr. Ford & Mr. GM.

I have owned a vehicle from all 3 and I have to say I was only impressed with the GM. The Ford and the Dodge were crap. I had to rebuild the tranny in both, twice !! I am never buying another BIG 3 car again. I was far more impressed with my '87 Lada, my '86 Mazda and my '82 and '88 Toyotas... and I am of course super impressed with my '90 Honda.

    Cheers !!
  • FIGHTIN' WORDS????........
Ahhhh, I'll just tell the border patrol to keep an eye out for gun powder toting Canadian :) See if you can talk your way thru that.....in ANY language :)
You ain't kiddin about the big 3. If it weren't for all these Ford and Chevy families who accept this lower quality crap maybe they'd be forced to offer some of the higher quality stuff that they actually make and sell in Europe.
  • depends on the dodge... on of my friends has a 01 dodge cummin turbo diesel pushing out over 400hp and 900lbs of torque on the stock motor and trans at ~40psi... we use to beat the shit out of mustangs and camaros that were half the weight
  • Here in Europe we had crappy cars from Korea. The brand was Daewoo.
But then they got bankrupt. So now, the same crappy cars have Chevrolet badges on them :D

Here in Europe it's cool to drive an American car. The grass is always greener on the other side, right? :)
  • Goelette wrote:

In France they refer to Dodge, Ford and GM cars as "une américaine" (an american).

Back in 1983 I remember seeing a Chevrolet Suburban being used as a police car in Rotterdam. I thought that was pretty cool since my parents had bought a Suburban in 1981.

    Cheers !!

Considering the crap I had to put up with crossing the border last August, I'm probably already in their database as a crazy Canuck. I was going to a rendez-vous in Grand Portage, MN, and was carrying all of my historical gear, including my uniform, my weapons, etc.

When the border guard in the inspection bay asked me how many knives I had in the car, I honestly couldn't give him an exact number. I said there was probably about half a dozen knives, including a sword and a bayonet. LOL

You are closer than you think!

According to Mapquest... and my own driving experience... you are about 3 hours away from Winnipeg, due south. I went through Fargo last August on my way to visit ABBEY and get some parts for my car.

I'm getting my passport this week so that should eliminate most of the hassle at the border. LOL
  • "Here in Europe it's cool to drive an American car. The grass is always greener on the other side, right? "

Actually i think it's double the "F you! " when i see some pretty neat looking stuff made by Ford and GM overseas. But they continue to turn out all this "good enough" stuff over here. I saw a tiny ford convertible in a movie that was loaded with driving lites and looked pretty cool......what do we get over here??? a luke warm mustang makeover with rear wheel drive and solid rear axle. Thanks but no thanks. If Chevy really wanted to impress me they'd make an almost exact replica of a 67 Camaro, front wheel or all wheel drive, you could even throw in the suicide half doors to make getting into the back easier for the nucleor families....JUST KEEP THAT body size and shape intact !

border patrol FTL!! I got my passport almost 5 years ago and im so glad i got it... i think that we should have a wago meet for the midwest
  • unimogs are the sweetest ever

  • i think that we should have a wago meet for the midwest

    That's a great idea !!

When and where? Should we converge on Fargo? Perhaps find a campground we can descend on?

Anyone else in the Midwest want in?
