right/rear brake pulsing/grabbing & releasing.

urgent help. i tried sifting through the crap on honda-tech.com's search archives and ours but came up with no answers. it makes me very glad that i don't have to go there very often thanks to this board.

the reason for the urgent help, i use my car for deliveries/work. 412,000kms and the faith to use for deliveries? you bet. anyway...

when i apply brakes the right rear makes a very distinguishable clunking/grabbing & releasing. you can feel the car squat and lift, squat and lift in that corner at very low speeds. only when brakes are applied.

new pads were installed about 2300kms ago.

a. warped drum?
b. not adjusted pads, to much gap?
c. debris?

i'll check b. & c. tomorrow. any other ideas?

Ensure your shock tophats are properly secured, make sure you cant see any sign or damage or wear i guess... take a look and post up some shots if you can get some.
  • sounds like b to me, but check your brake lines and fluid levels too..it could be anything.
make sure the shoes are on right.

when i did my swap a year ago i had the same problem. found out it was a warped rotor and then the caliper wasn't functioning right..i had to replace the whole caliper + new rotors.

adjusted the shoes, scuffed the drum & shoe (drum had 2" of lighter coloration in one section)

now the noise still exists, a bit quieter, not much. and now in reverse the brake wants to lock up, but only in reverse and only after about a half rotation of the wheel. only sometimes. very strange indeed. i think i need a brake shop. i hate drum brakes with a passion that many can relate with.

Wheel bearing? Wouldn't explain the 'only in reverse thing' fully though.

That is precisely why I'm thinking of doing the drum to disc conversion next summer.

Good luck with your brakes !!

well i backed off the ebrake cable a bit and... i think things have fixed themselves somehow. love it when that happens. i also hate it when that happens because i haven't learned anything.

Theres three places you can adjust the cable, one right by the handbrake, one at the drum and one right in the middle, all three need to be set correctly otherwise you'll either stretch the cable or lock up a drum like you did. but er... beats me what 'correct' settings are.
