What is the cost of a good OEM quality paint job?

EDIT!: Re-purposing this thread to ask the question that's really on my mind.

How much would a complete factory OEM quality paint job on my Wagovan cost? It's currently white, but I'd much more prefer red, a lot.

Original thread subject below line.

So, I've gotten over my wagovan funk and really started to love my car. The only problem is.......I hate the color, inside and out.

A lot. (I like red and black/gray) What can I say, white and blue aren't my thing.

I've considered painting it, but I'm the kind of guy who wants a factory OEM quality job and that costs insano money from everything most people have told me. So I'm wondering what you guys here are thinking, should I stay with my Wagovan and see about maybe painting it red? Or should I see about maybe trading it for one in the color I'm after?

I'm OCD about certain things (like we all are) so it's been getting to me no matter how many times I tell myself to just ignore it or that I'll eventually get used to it.

I didn't like my interior color at first. Not a whole lot can be done with a tan/brown interior. It grew on me. The outside was a weird color brown that I my friends and a 24 pack resprayed. Can't tell you which direction to go with your car but with mine it grew on me.
  • If you don't mind the time and money I'd just paint it. Nothing like making the car your own and putting the work in and feeling accomplished in the end.
Personally I plan on painting my interior black and same with the outside, interior first of course cause its cheaper.
But like I said, only if you don't mind the time and money.
  • Well the thing is I don't have a lot of money. I was looking into MAACO but from everyone I've asked they've been touted as mostly junk. The interior I can live with one moment and look at as vile and horrible the next.

I'm a bit of a fickle individual regarding cosmetics more than even mechanics themselves sometimes. It's just part of me and my crazy mentality on stuff.

EDIT!: Also, time isn't a problem, but money 100% is.
  • First you didn't like the wagon, now you don't like the color, it sounds like you are never going to be happy with this car. There are people who like white wagons so I say trade it or sell it and get something you can live with. Getting a cheap paint job will only warrant more disappointment.

Yes we all know that money is a problem, most of us have read your other post about getting rid of the wagon. This is your decision, nobody else. If you feel like it's going to be better for you to try and find a red/grey wagon and trade yours than go for it. Don't let anyone else make these decisions for you. Even with this said, all you're going to do is argue against it like you did on your last post. Do what you want, not what everyone wants you to do.

 Well I never really liked the color, but the car itself has grown on me. Otherwise I wouldn't have scrubbed it to hell and back to make it clean along with changing out a good bunch of the rubber seals and redoing some of the weatherstripping that had worn.

I agree that a cheapo paint job is a recipe for disappointment though.
  • im an idiot ignore my post! i swear i saw a pix of yours and it wasn't .... my mistake man!

pretty sure you have a WAGON not a WAGOVAN, just throwing that out there.
    It's an actual Wagovan.

    It all checks out:

White exterior and blue pleather interior
There isn't any cloth on the doors at all, just squeaky vinyl
Single piece folding rear bench that folds from the reclining handle and not an upper knob
    Rear cargo area window bars
    4-speed automatic tranny

Plus, my VIN Number checks out as it being a Wagovan and NOT a 5DR DX as most people who call their DX's Wagovans claim to have.

It honestly surprise me when I found out after reading the site for a bit. The rear label that says Wagovan isn't on there anymore, but then again the previous owner touched up the paint every year (single owner that was an old lady  ). It's liable it was removed if that particular area was touched up at some point or just fell off from old age over time.
  • my bad man, i must be thinking of a different member...edited my previous post!

and a good quality OEM paint job will run you anywhere from $3,000 to $6000 depending on who does it and quality of paint. I am a painter in a body shop so i know a thing or two about it :)

Paint is not cheap at all. And for someone to do a good job its not cheap either. But my price range should be about average, that included the jams and the engine bay. if you stripped it all out and dropped it off at a shop you'd probably cut a lot of cost off. possibly up to $1,000 if you gave them a completely naked car. that includes pulling the engine.
  • thats a wagovan just like mine but ive got a 5 speed. i love the inside of mine its very very clean and easy to keep up.

    ACK, my wallet!

I think I may just rock it white for a bit longer before considering a paint job or trade. (AKA my job sucks and I need to trade up to something with more hours.)

EDIT!: I have heard that bringing your own paint to a shop can bring down cost a lot or at least by a fair amount. Is that true, or just a pipe dream?

Lucky. I really wanted a manual, but finding one in my area that isn't trashed is tough. Most people in the general vicinity of my area abuse a lot of their cars so getting one in peak shape that's older can be an exercise in frustration.
  • Depends on the shop. Some shops will only spray what they spray. All else fails go to your local shops and ask. It never hurts.

    Price = Quality.

    Pay what you get for.

Im going to paint my Civic and Wagon myself (First attempt!)
  • I have seen a good paint job runs up to 1000.. Honestly, I rather spend more money taking to a shop who has better reputation. I dont really want to get it done cheap and have to spend more money to get it fixed
