1988 civic wagon idle problems?

Hi all,

I am new here but I am not new to honda civic wagons. I love mine and have done allot of work to it over the years. I am having to issue that I can figure out though. I will try to explain best I can. I have a 88 civic wagon 4wd 6peed. It started doing this thing the other day. sometimes it will start up and run with out any issue ad sometimes warm or cold it will do this thing......it will act like it disengages from gear, all the sudden you will loose power and then two seconds later it will kick back in and them out and then back in. So I take it out of gear and then it will sit there and hunt for idle. if you try to give it gas it will only rev up when it is on the up cycle of the idle hunt. I am at a lost!!!! I will turn the car on and off and back again several times and then it will finally stop.

Thanks for the help.

  • Sounds like an odd problem.. The first thing I can say is to get a volt meter and see if you are getting power to your injectors. Check all your grounds on the motor, especially the ECU ground located on the thermostat housing. Other than that, possibly a clogged fuel filter, old fuel pump, bad FPR, or possibly the main relay. Sorry that doesnt narrow it down.. but if you are getting good signal from the injectors, check your fuel pressure. If the pressure is good, you can move on and try to narrow it down with the ignition set up. Thats what I would do atleast..

All in all, good luck, and keep us posted on your results
