Oil in with spark plugs

so i changed my plugs today, and noticed that in all but 1 of they cylinders there was a ton of oil, i'm assuming that this is what would be causing my to burn some oil and have a little cloud of smoke when i punch it.

i know there are seals for the plugs to prevent this, but where are they located exactly? and could someone please give me a part number? there isnt really any honda dealerships out here, so i figure it'll be easier to find what i need online with one.

thanks

These come in a set - it's the first thing I do when I buy a Honda. They all go bad after about 100,000 miles. The set includes a Valve cover gasket, four spark plug hole gaskets and new retaining washers. I havn't ever bought a set from Honda. I always go to Napa and get the Felpro brand. They work great. Don't have the part #. Just ask for a valve cover gasket set. IT will run you about $30 and take about 30 min to change out. Very cheap, simple and well worth it!

This is what you will see when you pull your valvecover. Arrow indicates where your gasket is bad and oil is getting into your plugs. The gaskets fit in groves on the bottom side of the valve cover.

I found a video clip for oil in sparkplug.

  • yeah, if you dont drive your car for a few days good luck getting it started, its a pain in the ass. That is the FIRST thing all honda owners should do after they buy their car.
  • figures, do you think napa/other stores will have just those gaskets? back when i picked up the car i had to replace the valve cover gasket with one from honda (didnt include anything else) because it was leaking, and i really should have taken the time to look at everything in there.
  • yeah they should, i had to buy some for my sedan a while back, it was like $12 dollars.
  • Usually it's the rocker arm seals that leak the oil into the spark plug hole, if you remove the rocker arms/ shaft set there's thin o rings inside that get really brittle over time, when replacing these be real careful not to bend the valves and perform a valve adjustment while you're at it..

Is the oil on the porcelain of the plug or on the electrode? If it's on the porcelain it's rare that it will seep thru and make the car burn oil it's likely the valve seals are leaking

If you are talking oil around the top of the plugs, go with the new seals. Also - Be very careful about the sparkplug wires themselves. If they have become saturated with oil, they will be electrically conductive and instead of the spark traveling through your wires and plugs and making the arc across the electrode of the sparkplug, part of the electric spark will leak out through sparkplug wires and ground into the head and valve cover. This will work for a while but eventually will kill the electronics in your distributor. Take one of your oily plug wires into a parts store, caompare it with a new one. If Your wires are at all swollen or greasy to the touch I would recommend you replace them with a new set of wires as you replace the seals. It will likely save your needing to replace your distibutor or electronics later. I think it's called the (igniter module?) that gets detroyed. I might have my terminology wrong. Good luck.
  • Like Hondamatic says: If they are wet on the outside (porcelin side) than it will be the four o-rings under the rocker shafts (Honda even had a bulletin on those, although you don't need to do the rocker towers like it says). That will not cause your car to smoke or burn oil. D-series motors are famous for going through oil. Oil Rings are always clogged and so every D-series that I have and have had goes through oil. My 186k car uses 1 qt per 3k. My 203k car uses 1 qt per 1k. My 251k car uses 1 qt every 350 miles. All three have been thoroughly gone through externally and have ZERO leaks. Only have visible smoke when heavy accelerating. Unless you are rebuilding the motor, expect to go through oil. But do change those o-rings and spark plug wires if you have oil in the spark plug tubes.

Have similar problem, did the valve cover gaskets and it was still getting oily.
Where is a good place to buy the O-rings under the rocker arm assembly, neither napa or oriellys had them?
