To Taos, or not to Taos (New Mexico) - That is the question.

I'm in the Dallas area. We're headed to Taos in March. 2wd, automatic, 257k miles.

Should we risk driving "Spot" to Taos? I've never been there so I'm unfamiliar with the terrain. Does anyone have any Taos driving experience...to, from, or inside of Taos, NM?

Any thoughts? Thanks all. :-)

Well that's about half the elevation...looks like El Paso is about 3000 feet higher than Dallas, so Taos should be about another 4000 feet higher in elevation than El Paso. I'm just worried that it'll be 4000 feet of elevation all compressed into super steep hills goin' up up up up up and my transmission making us go slower and slower and slow slow slow slow slow!! heh

    Thanks for the help! :-)

naw the elivation is 6950 feet so ur looking at only another 3000 and from wat i have been able to look up it is pretty flat around the town

I pulled a motorbike home on a trailer the other day and had to keep it in passing gear just to stay at 50 mph going up hill. It made me think that if I did hit some large gradients headed up into some mountain passes, I could really get stressed out listening to my 257k mile drivetrain hitting passing gear for long stretches of time...and still losing speed...heh...
  • My wagon does fine here in Santa Fe, not much diff. from Taos here.

La Bajada hill is the only problem I have, between Albuquerque and SF on I25 - I have to be doing 110 at the bottom of the grade to be doing 50 at the top.

Sweeet...don't think Spot would make it to 110...but it'd be worth the try. ;-)

Thanks for the input. We've decided to bring the dog with us, so naturally the Civic Wagon is the vehicle of choice for this outing. Hard to be without the dog that long...hard to be without the car, too, after all they've both been equally loyal!!
