D16a1 swap in 86 wagon - buyer's advice?

so I'm planning on buying an 86 4x4 wagon with a partially completed d16a1 swap. I'm hoping for some advice... all the mechanical work is supposedly done, but it needs all the wiring done still. I know that part will be a fair amount of work, which I'm prepared for. it doesn't currently run, though. I'm expecting to run into unseen problems... does anyone have advice as to what I might be able to look for that can be foreseen? mostly I would like to be able to talk the guy down ;)

also, perhaps, advice on the simplest path to tackling the wiring? I found a 86 teg with a blown trans and was just going to strip it down and splice the dash and engine harnesses into the wagon. not having looked closely to either of them, the question I have most is, what about the VSS? will I have to fit the teg cluster into the wagon's dash to get a VSS? how have others tackled this?

yes, I have searched the archives.

thanks y'all...

btw I'm switching teams, coming over from a subaru justy.... I'm tired of not being able to find parts.

  • oh yeah - one more thing: I don't have room to store the donor integra, but it's cheaper to just buy a whole car and take what I need than to track down individual parts. so I'm just going to strip what I need and haul it straight to the wrecker. but while I'm at it, what else would be of use? it's a complete, running car currently.
  • you're headed in the right way.take all the wiring from the teggy and put it in wagon.the brakes are bigger in the front, so i would use them.good luck i'm doing the same swap in my 87
  • i would not get the integra just spend the money to either buy Rywire or start with a EK harness and splice OBD0 ECU plugs both harness run directly to ECU you would only need to splice into the dash for VSS signal for ecu the only bad thing is you might have to convert to OBD1 this would be the best route IMO rather then taking dash out to swap for a integra harness and you would still have to take the integra apart and find a place to keep

  • so you're saying the rywire or ek harness would allow me to leave the stock dash harness in the wagon? what about the vss - is there a place on the 86 wagon instruments to add a vss sensor, or do I have to swap out instruments with something else? I'm a little confused, it would cost me more to buy the rywire harness than to buy the integra...
  • sorry was just trying to give advise seeing that you had no where to keep the integra .. I have isolated the engine harness on my friends ef track car kind of what rywire is straight to ecu so maybe you can get some ecu pinouts and build harness straight to ecu VS. taking dash board apar...sorry this is making sence to me but I suck at explaning :(
  • oh. thanks ;)
having a place to put the integra is no problem - once upon a time I worked in a scrap yard. I could have that integra stripped down and put all its bits on the shelf in half a day ;)
