Alternator or not?

ok so my boyfriend took my wagovan to work last week because he left his lights on, on his da... lol lamo...
well anyways he was coming home from work going up colima hill when it died on him...since he was rolling and in 3rd he popped the clutch hoping it would turn the car back on but didnt? all it did was almost bring my wago to a complete stop... he said he saw white smoke coming from where the alternator is or close to where the cam gear is... when he tried to start it after the car came to a complete stop....all it made was like a ZING noise....my radio turns on... but the car doesnt lol... before this happend my starter was going out...i would have to crank it 2 times before it would turn on...
my friends dad sed maybe it could be the alternator because i have a sub in the back with no amp.... soooo...
any ideas.. of wat it might be thanks soo much!! sorry to bore you with my story.... ")thnx

  • No definitely not the alternator. What you have is a snapped timing belt. You will most likely have to replace valves, and you may have destroyed the engine.

To verify this, remove the bright colored 10mm silver nuts on top of the motor, then pull off the valve cover. Then there's two 10mm bolts holding the plastic cam gear cover on.

thank you so much!! my bf is checking that right now!!
  • I hope I'm wrong! Good luck! BTW it's not really your boyfriend's fault. Timing belts break from age or from oil leaking on them.

lol!!! turns out you were right!!! "(
i have to buy a new long block!!!
but my hommies knows someone selling a ls swap for 500 but it has a blown head gasket!! should i buy it or not?
  • Who says you need a new block? It's unusual to need a block rebuild. Usually the pistons win and you need new valves (which are in the head). However, for the price of a timing belt, valves, headgasket, and new head bolts (absolutely required!), you could get a low mile JDM motor.

There are some considerations. You said you have a wagovan, not a RT4WD, so you will need to do an MPFI conversion. The donor LS needs to be a 90 or 91. 92 or 93 would require converting to OBD1. 94+ transmission will not work in your car. There are some other considerations with swapping in a B series which you can look up online.

I would recommend a D16A6 (or SOHC non-vtec ZC). Converting to MPFI is not that difficult, and not expensive. The engine itself is cheap. It's a great motor and makes more power than your original motor. And you'll probably get your car back on the road much quicker.

However if you want to make the extra effort to drop in a B18A1 or early B16, that will be a lot of fun in a wagon.
  • I recently snapped the timing belt on my b7 while going 80 on the freeway. No bent valves, just replaced timing belt and water pump and kept driving. I've heard several similar stories of broken belt with no bent valves. I'm not trying to argue that you didn't bend valves(because it is likely), but you should check before you start throwing alot of money at it.

Same here, I would pull the head and see if the valves are actually bent. Even when my valves tapped my pistons all it did was put little pits in the top of my pistons, I put another head on it and ran it around like that for a long time, like 2 years! lol

btw, 500 will buy you a real d15b vtec + mpfi swap and obd1 to run it right. I wouldn't buy something blown up, just not worth it.

i would recommend the blue gates timing belt for your next belt. they are much much stronger not that much in costs. if you need one i can get one for you. just let me know.

i also have a new headgasket and other stuff you may need, oil pump, water pump, etc.
