Lug studs to short for bottle caps?

Ok so i was on my way to bonnaroo a few weeks ago and took my wagon with me.. As im driving along i feel a wierd vibration and pull over long story short the lug nuts came off while drive but the cars fine.. I had someone tow it so i could continue on my way to bonnaroo and get it when i got back.. But the tow guys said the lugs were to short and the nuts werent seating right... How did everyone else get their bottle caps to fit.. Did they have to grind some of the inner race off the center part of the wheel? Or use different lugs.. Any help would be great...

Did it happen to the front or the rear of your wagon?

Also I doubt the studs are too small. If the bottle caps are 13's you might have to get spacers. I have some 13x8 vw meshies and they rub against the front of my front calipers.

If the studs are short pull off the drums with 3inch screws. I can't remember the pitch size and what not. But pull off the drum and check if the studs are loose. The could've came loose. If the fall in, it'l lock up your drums and possibly mess up your hub assembly and bearing. That's what happened to my wagon.

Upgrading to extended lug studs is probably your best bet. I know if you shop around at some wholesale parts stores, you can get a set of 16 or 20 for as little as $25. I've got to do this as well, as I've got a set of 13x6" BMW/Mahle mesh wheels for the wagon, but the wheel hat is as thick as my OEM studs are long, I can't even get one full thread on.

if you havnt figured it out yet it could be the same prob i had with my miata wheels. the hub centric hole isnt big enough and not lettin the wheel sit against the rotor. so it appears as if your lugs are too short. check it out jsut and idea
  • 89wago: What did you do to resolve this? I too am wanting to mount miata wheels.
Sorr about the thread jack :)
