weak brakes

so here is what i have:

1991 DX... almost 120,000 miles on chassis

-original booster
-15/16 EX master cylinder
-oem brake lines
-oem rotors
-oem calipers
-$15 Advance Auto pads

NOW, the brakes on my car just straight up suck. the pedal feels fine, its not soft or does not go to the floor or anything. its just the actually braking sucks. even if i SLAM the brakes i cant get wheel lock.

my friends all stock 1991 Standard hatchback (with only 42K miles on it) has really touchy brakes, and they feel great. for example, you tap it and they grab GOOD.

not so with me, you tap it and it barely slows down. anyways my question is i guess what really could it be? just shitty pads? calipers...what not?
i have bled the brakes time and time again, so it can´t be that. again, the pedal isnt soft.

Sounds like you did all the right things except maybe the pads?Might want to check the rear brake adjustment.Yours should be better.Wgn.s got the bigger MC & the largest Honda rear drum. :D

yeah im really thinking it must be pads as well, since it just feels like the grip sucks lol.
i´ll check into rear adjustment (i have to go home first, that wont be for a couple months).

and no kidding about rear drums, they look nearly double what the hatchback got haha. woot bragging rights!

You should check to see that your rotors aren't glazed while you're in there. If it's been a long time since you replaced them, or you've not replaced them, it might be something to check.

That said, your braking power IS directly related to the quality of the pads you use. The rotors only come into play (unless they're glazed) when you're doing a lot of hard braking, ie track day.

    Good luck

what do you mean by glazed? is that just an "old age" thing that happens?

You only spent $15 on pads?

Dude. You know the answer to your own question. :P

Would recommend Mintex or Hawk. DO NOT TOUCH EBC.

Do you get better brake feel if you pump the brakes?

New rotors. Hawk HPS pads. </thread>

Seriously, though, given that you've tried the other things I was going to suggest, that's where I'd go next. Hmm, though could one of your calipers be leaking? Just a thought. Apart from that, you could upgrade to EX or RT4WD or Si brakes, but a simple pad upgrade does wonders. Replace the rotors while you're at it, too - they're cheap enough, and if you're going to upgrade you might as well start fresh without any of the old pad material on the old rotor.

yeah this was only because i needed brakes ASAP (since there was no pad left, also this is after driving it home 1200 miles haha)

yeah i have been looking into Hawk, seems to be priced right for what i need.

no leakage, i have checked the MC time and time again, its level never changes and i see no fluid around the calipers.

i guess the verdict was simple enough.
get some "real" brakes pads lol

adjust the rear brakes and see if that makes a difference, it should help a bit at least.
